GM CEO says country needs more Coders

As an IT professional I can hardly disagree with her.    iPhone 7 plus has more than half a million lines of code.    Modern cars, especially self driving cars like Tesla Model S has roughly million lines of code.

It is not easy to train and everyone does not have the aptitude for computer coding.   It requires high level of analytical and problem determination and problem solving abilities.    IBM gives aptitude test for their programmer applicants and almost 95% fail.    In my own company the hiring rate is really like 1000:1.   Most of the work is outsourced overseas for the very reason Mary Barra is talking about, lack of qualified people in the country.

Good Luck.

kind of person to write and understand code. Your background gives some insight to your post.

It does not appear to be spending.  There are bright young Americans graduating from college every year.  Are there just not enough, or just not enough who want to be programmers?  But this is not new, ExxonMobil has been encouraging STEM for years.  There is something else I want to add, but I won't in order to try to keep this serious.

Than staring at a computer screen 40hrs a week.

Besides, in America hustling is a occupation.

Education spending should focus on teacher/professor salaries to attract the most intelligent and hard-working people to teach our kids. Most people who make a decent salary don't even consider teaching. It's just not worth it.

All other costs should be kept at a minimum for education. Including buildings, transportation, programs, supplies and "nice to haves". Especially for K-12 where the students have not proven themselves.

Teacher tenure should also be eliminated. Except for teachers who prove there research capabilities. Published research and lengthy probationary periods should be require for all teachers who seek tenure. Even kindergarten and 1st grade teachers. In some states, you just have to work 2 years and be "liked" to get tenured. Making it very hard to fire incompetent and complacent teachers.

I'm curious to hear what DUANE wants to add. "There is something else I want to add, but I won't in order to try to keep this serious". It's already an all out shit show on the P&R board. Speak your mind.
