Adding to my earlier post...   probably the best weapon is your mind...  much like the more important sex organ.  An awareness of when something does not seem right.
The other thing is to have thought about a improper trigger action & how you will respond.  Too many people have never thought about anything bad & if the time ever comes, they need to react instinctually, not be trying to figure things out.  The late Jeff Cooper, Marine Corp vetran & founder of modern pistol craft writes about a color code of awareness which applies to many pursuits.
If you are in a nighty or underwear, barefoot, you are in a vulnerable position to a larger stronger male, dressed with shoes on.  Shod feet are a powerful weapon.
Most self defense classes do not spend enough time on breaking holds but it is a valueable skill.  Have your family members buy you the classes if they want.  It can not hurt.
I do not underestinate a woman's wile.  Barricading yourself in the bathroom (if your incall be sure the lock is good & that it doesn't have a slot for unlocking from the outside.)  Make yourself cry & through the locked door, ask him to take his donation back & just leave.
Another point...  do not make yourself a robbery target.  Don't keep excessive cash in your pocket book.  There are both sneak thieves & armed robbers out there.  A drop safe would be ideal.  A solid hiding place is almost as good.  If the dresser's drawers bottom one comes out...  You can push an envolupe over the back & it'll drop to the floor.  You'll have to remove the drawer to retrieve.
A hotel's in room safe would stop the sneak.
One Fav has 2 big dogs, such that I'm careful around them.  They seem friendly enough, one of them has come close to tripping me...  but I have no doubt he'd be protective.
Nothing to do with the hobby...  an aquaintance had a dog who had a justified reputation.  That dog has been dead for years & callers to his remote farm do not know that the replacement look alike is a gentle giant.
Having a call buddy is a sensible precaution...  Even if you call a your own phone at home & pretend.

I'm sure ladies here might mentor you but certain things should not be on a public forum.

Has anyone here ever felt the need to take a self defense class in case something goes wrong?  Even after doing everything neccessary to screen my clients I know that there is a tiny possibility that I may be attacked.  I have some martial arts training from being in the military but I'm wondering if I should take a self defense class or go through a martial arts program.  What do you ladies do to ensure your safety besides screening and hiring security?  Do you have mace or another self defense tool around?  Have you taken any sort of self defense training and if you have would you recommend a basic class or a martial arts program? Any input would be appreciated!

some self defense training, and carry pepper spray or something. If not, they probably should.

(I wouldn't be surprised if some carry a gun)

State lines is tricky....Gotta know which States have permit this...

"You may travel state to state with firearms under the Firearm Owners Protection Act (FOPA) of 1986. This allows you to transport firearms across state lines provided:
1. the weapons are transported unloaded;
2. the weapons are legal to possess in the state of origin, and in the state of destination;
3. the weapons are stored in an area of the vehicle that is not accessible to the passenger compartment (i.e., trunk);
4. if you make any non-emergency stops in any state (such as spending the night), that state's laws will apply to you.

If your firearms permit is a concealed carry permit, check if the states you are visiting recognize it. Many states have reciprocity for carry permits. However, some states do not allow personal carrying of firearms, so it is up to you to know which states are gun friendly to you and which are not.

You do not need to mail or ship your guns to yourself in another state.

Check out USA Carry wbsite or purchase the annual publication "Traveler's Guide to the FIrearms Laws of the Fifty States." This book is inexpensive and will explain in some degree of detail what the requirements are for each state, as well as contact information for each state if you have further questions. You can buy it here http://www.gunlaws.com/travel.htm"

verification..trust..instinct..most providers have a sixth sense when booking a client..if you feel any doubt about him do not book him..verify him thoroughly..once you feel the trust..your instinct will kick in..you will more than likely make the right choice..of course the is always the possibility of being wrong..blacklists are available..if you make your decision wisely you will feel at ease..there will be no need for mace or other extreme measures..this is sex for pleasure..there should be no room for fear or paranoia..

I have a pretty good sense of intuition, unfortunately some close family members pieced somethings together and I had to tell them what I've been doing.  They are surprisingly cool with it but extremely worried about my safety.  I get a lot of "well just because he has never hurt anyone before doesn't mean he never will.". They are on the verge of buying me a pistol and have already bought me a few bottles of pepper spray.  I don't want to ruin the mood by carrying these things around.  It's funny but I think they fear more for my safety now than when I was in the military, go figure.

They should be tucked in your bag and never used or even mentioned, unless you really need them. I also think it is cool that your family knows, and supports and cares for you, rather than judging you. If you have a military background, you must have some self defense training from there too. Good luck

I'm a male who has wondered and assumed that providers take precautions against being attacked, however I guess it's not always the case. In my personal life I have a female friend who advocates and brings self defense classes to women, it's a project of her's. Many areas around the USA have self defense classes geard for women and I recommend them. .

I recommend female providers take precautions and be prepared for the possible a-holes out there that might try to hurt you. Look into self defense classes!

Attached is a link to one in Southern CA...

Note: I do not know the people in the link nor do I advocate them, just an example of something I googled

Intuition & screening weeds out most of the bad apples... but not always. Hence, I carry mace, & always check-in with a friend when I've arrived to an appointment, & again, check-out with them upon departing. If they do not hear from me, they know something is wrong & know exactly where I am & can take the necessary steps.

Heads up, don't carry a switchblade... I use to & found out the hard way, they can easily be turned back around on you.. you have to get up too close to actually use them to defend yourself unfortunately. This coming summer I'm enrolled in a self-defense class(the name escapes me now, but the same style Steven Segal uses, where you use the other persons strength against them).

make love..not war..truer words were never spoken..if you insist on bringing pepper spray and other various items of self-defense to any session..it will eventually destroy your mindset as it relates to providing..you will never be at ease..you will never really enjoy yourself like you should be doing..you will always have that inescapable inner fear..that in itself is not good for you or your future in hobbying..just my 2 cents..

You sound like a hippy in a good way :) it's good to be laid back and enjoy yourself but I always like to be vigilant at the same time.

I agree breanna its okay to feel lax but unfortunately a good situation can go bad quick, believe me where I grew up trust was a hard thing to come by. Honestly I'd be offended if providers didn't take the precautionary measures to protect themselves. I consider it a degree of professionalism, albeit I have only seen one provider, and I won't be hobbying again anytime soon. But I still stand by my claim.

I have to suggest no firearms.  I have a CCP...  but would never have a weapon at a place where a an illegal activity takes place.   If you are ever stung, the firearm offenses might prove to be more serious than the providing.
Besides, if you are in danger, you're only going to only have what is on your person.  Your hands, feet, heels.   Perhaps your best option would be a run for the bathroom & lock the door.  Having a phone in there would be gravey.  You might leave a toiletries kit (might just have mace) in the bathroom until clean up.
A true switchblades are seriously prohibitted weapons...  some states allow them to be sold but not carried.  I have an inoperable antique in the safe... (recovered after a bar fight)  but still worry I might be busted.
You might want to carry a cork screw in case some gent brings a wine bottle.  With the cork screw extended it would make a nasty improvised weapon like a push kniife.  I don't know what other common objects might be improvised weapons.

Right, having a firearm with illegal activity makes it an automatic felony, then try keeping your job, right?

I could see a girl wanting to but the risk of something else going wrong, and then the possibility of getting busted....
