Somehow, the lady has to verify that you are the client with the referral service. With P411, your first name and last 4 digits of your ID must should be checked by her upon arrival. With RS2K, you provide your full name and city on the ID, and you also must call her from the phone # that is on file with RS2K. I think date-check uses your initials and 4 digits from your ID.
However, which one you use should be based upon which ones the ladies accept. If you are in Chicago, use RS2K. If you are in Texas, use P411. I'm not sure where date-check is popular.
Find a lady you want to see, see which service she accepts, and join that service.

I'm brand new to the hobby and appreciate the help and advice on this board. I have no past providers for references, so I thought I would use one of the two above sites.
My question is whether there is an advantage to one over the other? I understand preferred411 is used mainly in Chicago.
Also once you are verified w/ this service, can you use an alias ("Ron Mexico" "Client 99") or do you still need to use your real name, address, etc?

It depends on your area as to what site might offer more. p411 is a national site, and Datecheck (I believe) is highly used in the midwest. You can also look into RS2K.
The verification will require your true and full info, but you will only be verified the one time. It is in the best interest of the service to destroy your data after the verification is complete. Once you are verified, you can use just your first name for your profile and communications. At least, this is how it was for me.
Note: You will be called at work. Don't worry about it! It is so simple that you might not even realize it is your chosen service, and not just a random business call. I fretted over this a whole lot before making the call, only to discover I had nothing to worry about whatsoever.

Datecheck is about the most popular one on the east coast, but it is also national.
Date-check (with the dash in the url) is quite popular in more than the mid-west.
Also, if you have seen a couple D-C ladies they can vouch you in without giving them your personal info. I have been a member for quite a while and never gave them any info other than my reference ladies.
The same was true with P-411, but in that case my no-personal-info situation may not be the norm, I do not know. My situation was a little unusual with them.
I have been quite pleased with both P-411 & Date-Check.
Chicago uses RoomService2000, not Preferred411. Preferred411 is most popular in Texas and parts of the Southwest; DateCheck is nationwide. Pick the one that fits your geographic location best.

When a gentleman writes me and lets me know he would like a date and is verified through a site I still need a name, a real name, and his verification id at a minimun.
Give a girl an alias and you'll be sure to not be verified!
Once you are verified with these services, they will give you a code to give to women, who can then look you up. (Each is slightly different, but it is the same concept.) The whole point of this is to combine references from ladies, with one employment screening by a third party - and have a lady you would like to see be able to check that in one place instantly.
I happen to like Preferred 411 the best, but that's just a personal preference. It's free to ladies indefinitely, and I like the interface better. Which one makes the most sense to you will depend on where you are located. Try taking a look at women's site's nearby or posting on a local board to ask which is most commonly used.

IMHO, Preferred411 is a better arrangement. More ladies in more locations.
Don't forget, each lady will have her own screening methods. Just being screened by one of these services may not be enough. I think you should check with the lady you want to see and ask what her screening preferences are.
Although I do accept references from screening services, I often ask for other information too. Just know that the ladies are not trying to be nosey, it's just a safety thing.

P411 is the unltimate choice when using any agency for screening. Gina is the most relliable and dependable person who uses the utmost descretionary measures to keep you safe.
