People from the Mongoloid race are generally referred to as Orientals.  They include Chinese, Japanese, Malayans (which includes Philippinos and Indonesians), Thais, Vietnamese, Laotians, Cambodians, Mongolians, and in most cases, Burmese.  Also included are Eskimos and American Indians (Native Americans for the PC minded), although most people don't generally refer to these two groups as Orientals.  Asians are more inclusive.  All Orientals are Asian, but not all Asians are Orientals.  Asians also include Indians, Afganis, Iranians, Turks, a good chunk of the former USSR, and Arabs.  PC or not, I use the term Orientals simply because the term "Asian" is too broad in my view.  Personal preference, I guess.

the terms are all generally considered outdated and offensive...

acceptable in both Europe and Asia, and only in North America is there a question about its "political correctness," which is a relatively recent phenomenon.  I suppose it's a generational thing, but in my view "oriental" does not have the same connotation as "negro" or "colored."  Furthermore, as I said before, all "orientals" are "asian," but not all "asians" are "orientals."  I'm not a big PC guy, but perhaps that's a function of my age.  At any rate, check out this website, as I think you'll find it interesting.

or "oriental" in certain places.  that's irrelevant.  "oriental" is the modern day equivalent of "colored" and "negro" and to use it will make you seem dated and uneducated. but do what you like.....

institution?  Au contraire.  I've probably forgotten more in the last 10 seconds than you will ever know!  Tell you what, the next time you call someone (Chinese, Japanese, Thai, etc.) an oriental and they something along the lines you're talking about, mention to them that Asian also includes Iranians, Turks, Arabs, Pakistanis, etc.  In my experience, they say something like "Yeah, you're right," and then smile.  Works every time.  That's just the way the world is.  So, yes, I will continue to do what I like in this regard, which doesn't seem to offend anyone, except perhaps PC addicted people like you.  Maybe I've just been lucky, but no-one that I know (and I have many, many oriental friends) has ever been even remotely upset over the use of the term "oriental."  If your experience is different, well, that's what makes horse races.

call a black man "boy," and see what sort of response you get.

Yes, I find oriental offensive, not because of it's linguistic history, but because of its use from the 60's-now (think Vietnam war, Korean war, periods when anti-asian sentiments were high)

Calling a black man "boy" is a far cry from calling a Chinese (say) man an "oriental."  I think the two have very different connotations.  You may find oriental offensive, but many others don't, including a few of my Chinese friends, who I asked about this.  Given the circumstances, I'll go with what they say.

Perhaps I'm reading this wrong (please pardon me if I am), but the insinuation seems to be that no group (e.g. Asians) would want to be lumped in with "Iranians, Turks, Arabs, Pakistanis, etc."

Why would you think that?  Is this New York, or Crawford, Texas?

Having also graduated ivy, I'm sure you'll agree that ivy schools graduate some of the most close-mided pricks on this earth

is to point out that "Asian" is a very broad term, and that not everybody thinks the way you seem to do.  Furthermore, if you're implying that I'm a close-minded prick, then all I can say is that you must be a real dumb fuck, and pardon me if I'm reading you wrong!

In the meantime, let me make a suggestion.  If you have any friends who are "oriental" (by my definition), why don't you ask them what they think about this?  I did, and my quick sample of 3 all said they didn't care.  One was a young  (compared to me) Chinese guy about 30, one was a Chinese guy somewhere between 35-40, and the third was a Chinese lady (a medical doctor) of roughly (my guess) 55-60, who thought this whole issue was stupid and couldn't care less whether someone referred to her as "oriental."  Perhaps your experience will be different, but we all have to "call 'em as we see 'em," and that's how I see it.

alias, you fucking moron.  Indeed, if you had another head, you could start a rock collection!  Oh, BTW, I sincerely doubt that you know any Ph.D. Ivy Leaguers.  They generally don't associate with low-life board trolls who add absolutely nothing to the issues at hand and are incapable of responding intelligently to opinions and comments that may differ from one's own.  Calling you a dumbass would be overestimating your mental capabilities.  :-))
