For those who never served in the Armed Forces today the country pays respect to the galant souls who made the ultamite sacrifice for their country.  First known as Decoration Day after the Civil war it became a national holiday in 1971 now celebrated as Memorial Day. God bless The United Sttates of America.

Actually Memorial Day is not "celebrated".  The more proper term is that we "observe" Memorial Day a day to reflect on the sacrifices of our military members.   The tradition went back to the Civil War and "Decoration Day" was held by some states on May 30th.  The name Memorial Day was officially adopted by law in 1968 and the day set as the last Monday in May in 1971.  In 2000 a law was signed by President Clinton that calls for 3pm local time to be a National Moment of Remembrance and we observe silence for 1 minute.   Cheers to you all!
