Pilot apologizes that it's only 60 in Phoenix
Do you know when 60 feels like 80? Yep it was glorious

Back to college. Went home by train from Ohio to AZ at Christmas. The brakes froze and we slid into KC. Flew back. Got dressed in coat and tie for the flight because that's what you did back then. I still overdress for flights. But what an education those flights were! Nothing like seeing the world from 30000 feet! Happy Holidays, everyone!

I grew up flying on an almost weekly basis... I can't remember the first flight, as I was less than a year old. Putting the past together is hard under 4 years old, but if I were to guess it was probably to visit my family in London.

off to college in Des Moines, IA.  Have been on a couple of flights since then.

When I could walk on my own, I'd go up to the airport every day I could just to watch the handful of flights take off and land (Mostly DC3s, Does anyone remember Mohawk Airlines?)  I was about 7 and wanted to fly so bad I could taste it.

One day the airline offered a one hour tour of the city from the air, so I gathered up what few dollars I had and lo and behold I had enough to book fare and did so.   I was never so airsick in my life.   The stewardess (That's what they were called back then.) was very nice and stayed with me the whole flight.

When we landed there was a group of my friends from the neighborhood present to greet me.   Apparently one of them saw me board the plane and ran up and down the streets announcing my kidnapping.   My father was first and foremost in the front of the crowd, but to my relief his ire was not directed at me, but at the airline for selling an airline ticket to a 7 year old.

I tried to tell my dad it was OK, especially as I put a quarter in the insurance machine before the flight so if the plane had crashed, he would now have the magnificent sum of $250 to cover my burial expenses.

Ah, good times.

Now aren't you glad you asked?

Scenic ride it was.  Took flying lessons there years later and did not like it.  Shortest runway in the country...which is not a good thing.  The stop sign at the end of the runway has plenty of propeller marks on it, I know that for a fact.  House across the street has been hit more than once.

Glad you asked?

My first flights were alone, back and forth from Columbus to Nashville on AA- I still remember the wings the attendants gave me and just the fun of  being fawned over and petted.

But to this day I'm like what the fuck was my mother thinking putting me on planes by myself...but eh, it was the early 90s.
Shit was different then and I had a weird fucking childhood.

It was August 1966. Flew from New Jersey to Fort Campbell, KY to start basic training.

Best flight ever was August 1969 flying from Columbus, GA to Boston. I had finished up my three (3) years in the Army. There was no direct flight. Had to land in New York and pick up the Eastern shuttle to Boston. I just missed a flight out but the desk person said they would roll out another flight in 20 minutes...so I waited. Sure enough...they roll out a Lockheed Constellation...a prop job. The ticket person tells me to go ahead and board. I climb up the stairs and I am greeted by one of the stewardesses. I am in uniform and look dashing of course so I get a big smile. I settle into my seat. Absolutely no one else gets on board. I have the entire aircraft to myself. One of the stewardess comes by and I realize it is a girl I went to school with. Now it's like homecoming week. She gets all the ladies to come join us and, for the short hop from New York to Boston, I have these gorgeous ladies to myself. Welcome home!

It was quite an experience!
I am not a fan of flying, but an a great fan of travel!
Now my travel is mainly around wine regions, as I am an advanced wine scholar.
