Even way back in the days of Imperial Rome there were brothels.  Excavations at Pompei reveal brothels where the specialty of the gal who occupied a specific room would be graphically illustated above the door.

I had a marketing professor who theorized marketing was the oldest profession. He said that before the other profession could be performed, you had to know where to sell it, what to charge, etc...
