They each have their good points and bad points. The spa experience for me was always great becuase I was a regular at spa's where full service was available from most of the girls if they knew you were OK. A stranger walking in to an American spa has little chance of getting anything; they don't know if you are a cop so they will make you do it yourself the first time. After that, no problem ( at the places that are not rip-offs). Unfortunately, most of these outstanding places have been shut down (Spa 34, Spa 53, Comfort Zone, etc.). There are still some others around, but this is no place to disclose which Spas and who to see. That just invites undercover police visits.
