I've never used Registry Mechanic, but have a similar software called System Mechanic 4 Professional.  There may be a brand new version out recently. It works well for me.

Have been using Registry Mechanic--the free basic version--for awhile, but now have 9 things supposedly "wrong" with my computer.  It IS running slower since I put Black Ice on it.
Do any of you computer proficient people have an opinion on Registry Mechanic?  And is it worth the money to invest in the computer program (and not just use the free basic one)?

Not farmilar with that particular program, but I have found two things which seem to effectively prevent PC slowdown:

1) A reputable virus program (Norton if you must, but I use Computer Associates, which is not for the faint of heart)

2) Spybot (www.spybot.com) - this free program, when set up correctly and updated regularly is a friggin miracle.  I can't believe they are still giving it away, as I would easily drop $50 on a copy.

Anyways - thats my $.02, and I do networks for a living.  BUT, I'll be the first to defer to better wisdom or knew knowledge on the topic.  Thats what I love about this industry - there is no lack for information.

:-)

The weblink listed sent me to PC Security News, which looks like an newsletter/information-only site.  I didn't see anything that might indicate being able to download any software here, unless I'm not looking in the right place.  If you could post some more info, it would be appreciated.

The program Black Ice uses a lot of resources on your computer. For example: it uses lot of memory, CPU and hard drive resources. Don't waste your money on a program like that.

Use your money on a hardware firewall instead. Like a router. It's much better on the long run.

Before you go buying some new program to see if that will help your computer run faster go to the link and run the FREE diagnostic site...they can tune up your computer and will walk you through most things that might be wrong with it to fix it on your own

Download Spybot Search & Destroy at the link below.

This is free, very well known software that does a number of
things, most notably identifying and allowing you to remove
unwanted spyware and adware.  It will also allow you to flag
things that you know are bad but still want on your computer.

It also has tools that let you see what programs are running,
which ones are started up at boot time and some registry stuff
that relates to spyware.

Also, Ad Aware is similar but concentrates on adware.  That
site, lavasoft.de , also has a registry tool whose base version
is free.  I'm very happy with Ad Aware but haven't tried the
registry tool yet.

good luck,
