This whole alias thing is weird.  Don't we have enough anonymity as it is?  I mean, MrSelfDestruct, Willia?  My "name" was a result of TER taking the first six letters of my then email address by default.  I mean when I look at all these people with clever names, I get pissed!  I want a clever name too!  These aren't aliases?  Now, if Sir Prize (his real name?) wants to chew someone out, use me.  In my first encounter with a provider (THAT in itself is a pretty hideous euphemism; can't we come up with something more complimentary than that.  I mean my experiences have been so wonderful, I'd rather call them...well, I don't know, but anything else.) I tried to use a pseudonym.  Didn't work out though.  The first couple of times she called me by my name, I didn't respond because I didn't know she was talking to me.  No, I didn't feel VERY much like an ass did I?

After reading some of the recent posts after being off line for awhile, I realized that I was guilty of being and doing something I don't respect in others.
Either by ignorance or just being stupid, I have been posting responses under an alias.
Not that I have been a prolific writer, but I would like to think I have contributed something to these boards.

In the interest of full disclosure and  to apologize to anyone who may have tried to get in touch, let it be know than "rb288" has left the building and you will not hear from him anymore.

I am "bobb3950" and shall be henceforth and forever posting as such...

Just my opinion...

If you have something to say, say it.

Be man enough to take responsibility for what you say.

If you don't want your comments attributed to you, don't say it.

Works well in real life too.

Want to put your real name up here for coworkers, LE, your SO, or for that metter me, to see?  If your really mean your words, you'd have no objection.  But obviously you're too intelligent to do that.  So we're all hiding behind aliases to some extent and it comes down to a matter of degree.

Life is a complex web of relationships, emotional, business, power relationships.  Although I haven't done so yet, I can easily imagine situations where I'd rather post under an alias to avoid hurting someone's feelings or not get put on some provider's blacklist.

The only problem I have with aliases is when it's a matter of personal credibility, when the post says, essentially, "I know, take my word for it".

If you establish an on-line identity (SirPrize), then it is cowardly to use an alias to that on-line persona.

Why would an anonymous poster need a further layer of anonymity except to not want to be held accountable for his words?

My observation is that most of the time when a flame war starts or an unfounded accusation is made, it is done by someone using an additional alias.

To me, that is cowardly.

I say what I mean, and mean what I say (unless of course it is a joke).

IMHO, not enough people do.

If you don't want to get on a provider's blacklist, then maybe you shouldn't say what you would only have the courage to say under a second alias.

So what you're saying is you're allowed one alias, is that it?
But no more?

This is an online chat board.  Different people create different
personas - some create more than one.

get over it,

Some people know who SirPrize is in real life and that is the same as using my real name (a name is merely a means of identifying someone).

To those of you who don't know who SirPrize is, it wouldn't matter if I used my real name, "Jim Smith".

SirPrize/JimSmith, irrelevant; either way I am held accountable for what I say by those who know me, and my on-line persona is held accountable for those who don't know me.

Keeping yourself accountable for what you say makes you think twice before you say something.

You have just identified yourself as someone who will not stand behind his words.

I will keep that in mind when you post.

I never post under an alias when I am taking a position that others may strongly disagree with in large numbers.  Would rather face the music and the PMs.

The ones that I have gotten have been all cordial.  I have gotten PMs and returned PMs from members who I have disagreed with, all those cases have worked out well with me coming away with a better understanding of them.  PMs tend to remove the interpersonal interaction armor that we put on when posting here and on other boards, even when we use our usernames.

rb288 made some great posts!

I admittedly use a few aliases at times, but usually when I am being comedic and it is appropriate to the post.  Everything I say in sincerity, good or bad, is done with as Mr. SD, so that people who have feelings about it can PM me if they want.

yes I too have posted on occaision as
hgwells and just one or two others such that the names were as humorous as the original post...but now just xenopus, an ugly frog/toad.

they can change your "name."  First make sure it's a name that isn't already taken.  You can check this by creating an alias and seeing if it takes.  If it does, ask TER to change your "name" to this "alias" name.  See, you too can now have a clever name!  Enjoy!!

I guess I hit a nerve, that was not my intent.
Mostly I just wanted people to realize that when using an alias, you don't have access to PM responses that you may be looking for.

Thanks to MSD, it's nice to know some things I share are "of interest" to some.

Anyway, if I can help keep things lively here, flame on, I'm a big boy, I can tak it.

I agree with some things Miss Anonymous said, and I think there are very valid reasons for the providers to use aliases.

comment or point and not have to deal with any PM's.

Hell I could ahve posted under an alias... but why.  Not like anyone knows who I really am or anything as it is.

Often an alias is invented to add humor to a post.I have a dozen of them and it's fun to see who figures them out and pm's me under my username. Some become throw away names and others become classics.  Now that's been said, Please pour me Two fingers of.........

Btw,can I have a taste?

My aliases are all about humor!

If I have to speak my mind...first person...
VonRyan will speak for me.
He's one hell of a spokesperson...lol...just as long as it doesn't get to his head or mine for that matter...speaking of which...
I could also use a couple of fingers of your ID right about now.

Cheers!

I too have several aliases. They are much like "pen" names. Some reflect my personality and some are the antithesis of who I am. I always use them under the banner of "creative licence" and never as a cheap disquise for anonymous flaming.

I'm glad TER permits the use of aliases because otherwise I would very rarely post and I know many of my fellow providers feel similarly.

On occasion don't you guys wish to see an honest viewpoint from a lady that's not colored by her desire to appear politically correct and keep her business intact?

We've all seen the questions about penis size, good clients, bad clients, etc. Aren't you tired of seeing the same "pc" answers from the ladies: "I see one client per day; I have never had a STD even in my civilian life; I like all of my clients equally; they're truly the most wonderful men I've ever met; I adore every penis equally even if it requires a microscope to find it" ...LOL.

A man using an alias can also say less than tactful comments about the ladies without worrying about repercussions when it comes time to making an appointment with a TER lady. I've gleaned some important insight into men's thinking and their expectations this way.

I don't like people who use an alias to make a crude or offensive comments. However, TER is supposed to remove all such posts, alias or not.

And lastly, regarding PM's--I don't need them, whether chatty or chastising. I get a ton of email every day and it's time consuming to keep up with that--the life-blood of my business. If some of you thrive on the behind the scenes chit-chat, I'm happy for you and glad you have so much free time, but I don't.

Thanks for reading my anonymous 0.02. :)

MA;

You make a convincing argument and are quite correct in you position.
What may be right for one is not right for another.

No offense meant, we're in this together, let's just be friends.

Peace...

YES I'M SHOUTING!!!

There are many times I use different aliases to mask my identity to protect my real username and the wonderful women that know me.

Personal safety is a major factor, because if you knew who I really was,..... I'd have to kill'ya. Just a joke folks, don't believe the last sentence I'm really a sweet and sensitive guy.

And I'm sure that there are many on here that think they know who I really am. And most probably don't care.

I was referring to the male posters.

I can certainly understand why a provider cannot always use her real-fake-name in a post.  You ladies have business considerations that we men don't.

I apologize for not being more clear.

I think aliases are used by space aliens posing as real people.
