I know that almost everyone is exposed to the cold sore virus during their life.  I have never had a cold sore before - maybe I don't have the virus or maybe my immune system has dealt with it.

Obviously, it could be suspicious for the wife if all of a sudden I started getting cold sores.

What are the risks of the hobby in terms of getting cold sores?

I've never had one either.  Thank the Lord.

I did once have a client show up to a session with cold sores as if everything was fine.  I looked at him and told him I can't kiss him, he knows that right?  He said OK.

I cannot believe someone would come to a session like that.  Jesus Christ.

That has to truly be a SMH moment. I too can't even imagine coming to a session with cold sore.

and come to think of it, I don't think I have ever had one either. I know for certain I have never had one as an adult, but perhaps I had one as a kid, but I wasn't getting laid at the time, I am sure. lol

I've never had one either,  but I've seen the "Herp Lips" on several people and I just don't believe the common notion that "everybody" has them.
I think that's why people with cold sores don't think it's a big deal. It is and I don't want that shit.  Oral herpes will be the start of the zombie apocalypse.  Mark my words.

That is why you have to be very very careful. I saw one chick at work pick scabs off her herpes sores. It very prevalent in the Northern Virginia, DC, Maryland region.

Ever in question of something, stay away. Safer as such.

I have never had a Cold Sore. I use to get Canker sores but that was due to high levels of acidic foods I was eating... such as my lemon cravings lol. Once the Dr told me to take acid stuff in moderation and not go so crazy on it, never had a single issue since.

Canker and Cold sores are vastly different things. Eating lemons like they are candy will give you a not so pleasant sore in your mouth, typically where the gums and cheek meet as it is where most things tend to settle. Thank God I listened as a teen and stopped putting myself through that lol.

Canker sores are not herpes.  You should also avoid toothpaste with SLS (essentially a detergent.)  It tends to wash away protective coatings on the inner mouth.  People who are prone to canker sores have significantly fewer after switching to an SLS free toothpaste.  They are harder to find, but do exist.  May have to buy them over the internet.  That's what I do.

It is 70 to 98 percent rate of infection depending study, 50 percent among preteens. You can catch it from sharing a glass or drinking out of a drinking fountain not just kissing or sex. Around half of the people who have it are asymptomatic meaning they carry it yet do not get the sores yet can still spread it. Giving that you don't get the sores odds favor your one of those that are one of the asymptomatic carriers thus have nothing to worry about. But even if you are one of the rare adults who isn't infected with the virus there is many, many ways to get the virus that have nothing to do with sexual activityou it is very explainable.

Herpes type 2 is a little different. It has to have skin to skin contact and prefers skin next to a mucus membrane. Now that one would be tricky to explain away as it isn't spread through saliva like type 1 is.

Dental Hygenists will not treat a patient with a cold sore because they can't tell which one it is from the way it presents itself.

If you are in contact with someone with active cold sore, you are exposed.  The contagious period begins when the skin over the area (most often the lip) begins to itch or feel funny and lasting until after break out and fully healed. Most contagious when the lesion opens and is oozing fluid.  The fluid is contagious.
You get it by contact (kissing etc) but you can get a lesion on your penis or in your vagina (obviously aimed at both genders) when receiving oral sex.
Most of us have been exposed at one time or another but not everyone gets it.  Resistance is probably genetic.
Once infected it needs to be treated immediately on first sign or the treatment is useless. Meds include one that needs to be taken five times a day for some period to one that is a one and done.  (Best to discuss with your doctor tho write me if you want specific names.)
Having this is annoying but will probably not ruin your health.
Explaining this to a spouse if you have been married for some time would be hard. Recent marrieds can take the position that they have always had these form time to time. Hard to do after 30 years of marriage when this is a first outbreak.

...and many ways to acquire it. HSV1 and HSV2 are hardy little critter and will survive in the environment for a while. You can acquire them by touching many common area surfaces, so just another reason to use touch-free public restrooms wherever possible.

I've also gone to making sure I keep the paper towels that I've dried my hands with and use those to contact the door handle on the way out -- I've seen WAY too many yahoos not wash their hands and then guess what they're doing to get out of the bathroom? Yep, grabbing that door handle.

HSV1 and HSV2 will also show up in STI tests -- I have an "equivocal" reaction that my doctor believes is an artifact from an exposure that occurred a long time back but it's not active. No sores and/or lesions in evidence for years but it still gives a ghostly reaction in testing.

I'd hope that all of us are cautious enough to see reputable providers and that such a provider would be as concerned about their health and their future business -- but we also know that stuff happens. Be careful!

that if you get cold sores already, then you can get it "again" from a provider.  And If you don't get cold sores, it's more likely that you have a super immune system than that you have not been exposed to the virus, and as long as the provider doesn't have visible sores, the risks are low.  Is that accurate?

If you have the virus but it's inactive (i.e. you never get cold sores), does any hobbying activity present an additional risk that cold sores will develop?

If you're an adult and have never had one, and your parents have never had them, your siblings have never had them, you're probably just one of the people who doesn't get them.

Just don't go around kissing some girl with oozing sores all over her mouth :-)

You'll be fine.
