On the last day of summer, and hitting that age, what kind of car would you get for a fun car?

Convertible, sports car, luxury four door sedan, SUV?

I've always been partial to a '68 or 69' Stingray Corvette with the cheese grater grilles and NOT a convertible.  Been there done that.  While fun, a pain in the butt as far as the older cars.

Liking the new Infiniti Q60.

Classic cars will always be in style without getting dated IMHO.

How about you?  What would be your fun car and not daily driver.

Then, one day, a co-worker let me drive his BMW 328.  The next day, I test drove a Lexus and bought a 328.  I'm now on my 3rd BMW and will be a loyal BMW customer until I stop driving.  It is just pure-fun to drive my BMW

and I always knew when it was time for a new car, When my current car needed tires, it was time for a new car.

I guess come to think of it, I do the very same with women, I lease instead of buying.

I'd like to be one less person contributing to reliance on foreign oil and also lower my environmental footprint. Besides, it's a really cool car, and talk about torque ratio, right at each wheel. Also, it bears the name of one of my heroes.

But alas, I have difficulty justifying spending 95K for a car.

At the end of the day, a car is something that gets me from point A to point B. So, I own a modest vehicle.

My answer to your question, "What is your definition of a cool car?", one in which the air conditioner is working properly.

With the optional Philip's Ladder turn signals I'm with you on that ;-)

and I personally produce more than enough petroleum to allay my guilt about driving a gas guzzler, or even several.  Don't be "smug" drive a good old American muscle car. lol

While I tend to agree with you about American muscle cars, the dual-motor Tesla S with their new 100 KW battery goes from 0-to-60 in 2.5 seconds -- the quickest production car made anywhere. The only limited-run pseudo-production cars with similar 0-to-60 times are the LeFarrari and the Porsche 918 -- with prices at $1.4 million and $850K.  (Sad, but true.)

Unless it uses gasoline by the truckload it's not a "real" car.

Full disclaimer here, I am in the oil business. I think 5 mpg is just about right where it comes to fuel economy. lol

I will deny this and claim my account was hacked if anyone ever mentions this post in the future, but yeah, 0-60 in 2.5 fucking rocks. The last car I had that was anywhere even close to that was my Cadillac XLRV hard top convertible that had a super charged engine that would get 0-60 in about four seconds or so and topped out at about 180 MPH. I "guess" four seconds is in the same "neighborhood" as two point five, but when I say it out loud it doesn't really sound that way. lol

...Or a 1963 Vet split window resto-mod with updated suspension & brakes & a (bad boy) small block engine.

Your suggested C2 Vette sounds like 0-to-60 in 6+ seconds to me -- the Tesla might go 0 to 60 and back to 0 in that time.  (But, I agree...a 1963 Vette would be a fun car to own!)

So you might go old school and look for an old pony car or a modern version -- Gt 350 or 500, GTO, Barracuda or even better than those a Tiger or Lotus 1200 (Like in the 60s show The Prisoner and about as far from a pony as you're going to get ;-).  The 56 and 57 (if I have the years right) T-birds were highly cool cars.

More modern would be maybe the newer Lotus or a GT-R.

The old Vets are nice and the new ones pretty awesome.

BMW is supposed to be coming out with a modern tribute to the old 2002, which for it's time are an incredible car and would have a certain cool factor for many.

Then you might look farther back and thinking about an old Packard or Nash.

The Volvo 1800 was also a very nice looking, sleek lines car for it's times.

As for convertibles, very nice in theory but unless you live in the right climate just not really that great in practice.

You can significantly step the price curve up and go for a lot of the exotic cars but...

Red corvette with playboy or Betty Boop emblems !!!

I've always liked American muscle cars, so if I were looking for a fun car to drive, it would be the latest Shelby Super Snake... 750+ HP and equipped with all the bells and whistles.

I'm currently driving a boring Lexus RX350. LOL

I thought about the Charger Hell Cat but couldn't justify the extra cost. The SRT has all the bells and whistles of the Hell Cat except the blower, and quite frankly 485 HP is sufficient to scare myself stupid if I'm not careful (not to mention the other drivers on the road). But damn, 707 HP would have been sweet.

When that big V8 lights up or I put my foot down and it just screams, oh god I love that sound. I just love driving this car..

A Charger owner:)Love the sound too!I like the old muscle cars as well but if I had to choose a hot sports car would be Aston Martin DB9.If I wanted to go older for a sports car would be the Acura NSX built in the 90s but a friend of mine dad gave her his and I drove it wow...super fast!I wonder how the 2017 is going to be...
Sporty car to drive around every now and then would be 77 Mercedes convertible with the hardtop that you remove by hand

British racing green.  Although I already have a cool vehicle, a 2013 Jeep Wrangler soft-top.

Right after high school I bought a '59 MGA. Beautiful car. Had an MGB, too. Triumph Spitfire, Triumph TR3, '65 Pontiac GTO convertible, '69 Jaguar E-Type ("XKE") coupe. Now drive a metallic red Mustang GT with lowered racing suspension and wide sticky tires. I love speed, almost as much as BJ's ;)

Girl, check out the 50th anniversary one! It made me soaking wet in 1.2 seconds lol!!!

I have lusted after this car for almost 10 years now, total dream car! She is SO incredibly sexy and thankfully, the exhaust has been tuned to be a nice, deep, throaty growl. Unlike the exhaust notes of a Lambo or Ferrari which sound more like mopeds, IMO.

Great minds, and all that. ;) lol

That car is THE one that actually made me wet. Was not allowed to drive it but let me tell you how spectacular even the paint was, a stunning metallic flake. Wanted to lick it. Panty dropper for sure, if I wore panties. lol

Porsche 914/6. For only one year they put the 911 flat 6 in the tiny 914. It was a rocket and would corner like it was on rails.

Mazda RX7 turbo. Turbocharged rotary engine? Oh, yah!

Honda NSX. Yes, it was $80-90K, but it would run with Ferraris. They can be had used for $25K or so I'm told...

BMW 2002/turbo. The plain old 2002 was great fun (this is the one I owned!), but with the turbo? Look out..

The classy sleeper? Not the fastest in the bunch, but the Citroen SM was way ahead of it's time.

I used to drive a BMW 2002 too.  That thing was a fun car.  It brought up memories when you mentioned that.  I remember that it had no power steering, so tasks like parallel parking required some muscles!

so I could push it over a cliff.  For me, a cool keeper is a C-5, C-6 or C-7.  Have had one of each.  Afficionados will know what I'm talking about.

Took one for a spin this weekend and damn what a bad ass ride!
Vroom vroom!!! :)

How practical does it have to be? If not practical at all.. a '52 MG TC...
I had a '67 MG B in college.. that was a cool car..
A great driving car I had was a VW Corrado when they first came out (1988 or so..) a very fast car.. that cost way too much to maintain.. the spoiler that went up when you went fast made the car..the low profile tires made it easy to bend the rim of the alloy wheels ..and then you would have a slow leak.. awful..
I had 3 Land Rovers but now I am in love with my Mini Cooper Countryman.. it's new.. fun to drive and practical (all wheel drive).. so that's a cool car.. Muscle cars never did anything for me..

I lost my virginity in the front right seat of my mothers '66 MGB.....

Damn... small.. I used to park and use the back bumper & trunk hood.. I had that car when I was working as an actor.. in summer stock.. 8 shows in 10 weeks.. worked hard.. but played harder..

2013  Subaru WRX 5 door is my daily driver. It's fun, practical and it's reliable. And it's fun.

2004 Mazda MX5 Miata with a Supercharger added to double HP and Torque, plus suspension upgrades is my play car.
I have put a lot of miles on this and now only drive it when I can drive with the top down. It's a real Go CArt.

2002 Ford F-350 diesel to pull my 5th wheel trailer. It's a slug that can pull just about anything.

Love fun cars!!!

Better than an old beat up Camry...

Seriously, once you buy a Corvette, you'll never look back.

But ever since the 70s I've wanted a customized conversion van with a built in bed, wall to wall shag carpeting, and a trippy mural painted on the sides.  That would solve my problem of where to host my ladies as well.  Have Van, will travel.
