Just watched a rerun of Columbo (old detective series) and saw Valerie Harper before she became well known on the Mary Tyler Moore show and later Rhoda.
This was an earlier episode "The Most Crucial Game" (1972) where she had an one minute air time playing a high end escort.
Some other obvious ones are "Working Girls " with Melanie Griffith, "Pretty Woman" with Julia Roberts and recently "50 Shades of Gray" Julia Stiles in "Blue."
How far back or recently do you remember seeing escorts being portrayed on main stream TV shows or Movies (hobbiests and providers)?
..an episode of Three's Company when one of Chrissy's old high school friends comes to visit. Turns out that she was a $100 a night call girl. I believe this was during the early 80's.

...but I recently saw the 2015 movie "Zipper" and it unnerved me quite a bit with some of the angst, paranoia and awkwardness the main character displayed that comes when you first begin hobbying. Brought back some uneasy memories.
i know what you're trying to say, but i hate to tell you that there was both movies and tv in 1955.
but companions have been a staple of literature for centuries... moll flanders, fanny hill, scheherazade, jezebel in the bible, to name but a few.
i've always found the depiction of hookers/escorts on tv/movies to be ludicrous and one dimensional, even less realistic than the shallow renditions of every other character. the ladies i have seen are are less depressed, angry and detached from life than those shown in popular culture.
Yes, that was my point. Sonia in Crime and Punishment. Verdi's La Traviata. And on and on. And many of those treatments have been recreated for movies and TV audiences, repeatedly.

While Melanie Griffith was in "Working Girl", she played a secretary not an escort. She did have a great role in "Body Double" where she played Holly Body, a porn star who did private work on the side. She played a hooker in "Milk Money", though "Body Double" IMHO was a better movie.
