With regards to my kids, they had sex Ed in the 5th to 6th grades in school
Early on I taught them the correct verbage for body parts.... vagina and penis
We did not have any tallywhackers in our house
I am a bit older than any other providers on this board
When I grew up my parents did not display much affection or intimacy let alone talk about it
Needless to say almost everything my parents did to RAISE me I did the complete opposite
And it worked!
My 4 adult children are loving caring hardworking open minded and wonderfully thoughtful.
I also (I believe there are one or two in the Carolinas) have been able to share my "intimate retirement" with my kids. I am fortunate to not have to tell lies or make up stories....it affords me to enjoy what I do even more.

With a nod to the "60 & Over" board for a great subject - I'm too young to post there but like their perspectives.

How did you learn about the birds and the bees?  If you've passed on that knowledge to your own kids, how did you go about it?

In my case Mom caught me with an older brother's Penthouse, reading the Forum about a year before puberty, so I still had pants on.  She dragged me to see my Dad, handed him the magazine, huffed loudly, and closed the door as she left.  Dad asked where I got the magazine and that was the end of it.  You see, sex didn't exist in our very religious house.  Only a married couple was permitted to discuss sex, and it was a duty of the woman to meet the man's needs and you'd go to hell if either of you enjoyed it.  Ah yes, the wonderful memories of growing up in the Bible Belt...

Everything I ended up learning was at school and from magazines.  So much misdirection even Pocohontas could get lost!

My mom took out a book when I was around 11.  We read it out loud together in whispers after the bedtimes of my siblings.  It skipped the details like exactly how that penis got into such a private and small place.  So I literally had no idea how that happened until it did...shocking at best for this little lady!

Also had a health class that skipped those details but went over the BIG picture about how the babies evolved. One of clearest memories I have is the narration of a young girl who was writing in her diary that when her period had arrived, she knew exactly what to do because she had been practicing for months.  So confusing to me at that age why a person would be taking a tampon and placing it repetitively as a practice run prior to bleeding...the school system in NC still does not teach real info.  They teach protection from STDs without really focusing on birth control and forget the sensuality around sex.

I'm originally from Europe and I was taught at school at the age of 12 I guess.
We had separate classes focused on this subject only, together with "advices", protection basics and discussion of different orientation. It was obvious for me this would be the case with most of the 'developed' countries, until I found out it isn't. Even in UK girls get pregnant in super young age and they end up saying "oh, but how was I supposed to know that sex leads to pregnancy?". true story.

btw. I have never really had my parents talking to me about it, though. Just few jokes from my mom like "remember to use condoms" from time to time when i was going out lol

boys and girls exploring one another and sharing pictures and jokes, AND misinformation---LOL  For years, until I got up close and personal with my first Asian cutie, I thought that their thangs were sideways(like their cute lil almond-shaped eyes), since I was told this by older boys, who, I'm sure, delighted in giving this misinformation to mess with my virgin mind:))
This coming week, when I see my lil fav Asian lady again, I'm gonna do a double check, just to make sure she is anatomically correct, I know that she is made of sugar and spice and every thing nice, soooooo, sideways, right side up, or  upside down, I don't care, because she is wonderful lil wiggler, and a speaker in tongues during our ed u k sha nal classes, and over the years, I have learned to cherish and delight in getting this response to my "teachings", and, to tuck away in my memory for the days/nights when I'm alone and pondering the mysteries of the universe AND WOMEN;P~~~

We had classes at school that were from the stone-age and made us laugh more than actually learn anything.  We finally saw a good one in 6th grade a guy from class brought.  It was animated, but it showed EVERYTHING.  My mother didnt teach me anything about sex other than what I caught from the crack in her door when I was about 10.  Needless to say I never peeked in there again.  I would pilfer my uncles 'FOX' magazines and they were totally hardcore.  Full penetration, right around the time I was 13 or 14.  17 finally did the deed and the rest is history.  Nothing too colorful there.

My good Catholic mother would consistently answer "we don't talk about those things" or "we'll talk about it when you're older".  Like SexyCarolina, my parents didn't show a lot of affection.  They were so stiff that I joked for years they must have gotten lucky on all three attempts at kids.

On another note (sightly off but still close)...
In fifth grade, I remember watching the projector film in black and white regarding reproduction.  They talked about a pad BELT, which totally baffled me as self-adhesive liners were already widespread and I had seen at least one tampon before that day.  I was very thankful when my mother clarified the age of the film and that the newer technologies were the norm.

Did you have to make me relive that awful memory of the belt?
Lol
But I sure did read a bunch of those Harllequin romances when I was young.

Thanks for the memories
XO
