Nothing need to come out of your bag then.

I'm retired and now single.  I will be traveling quite a bit in the US and want to know how to get my hobby dollars from one city to another.  The ATMs don't want to spit out enough to cover the donations needed.  On my next trip out west I'll probably use over $2000.
I don't like to leave cash in the TSA tray when screenin

I think you can ask for a hand-search by the TSA agents.  That shouldn't add more than 2 or 3 hours to your wait.  Tell the friendly, well-trained and understanding (sarcasm) TSA agent your concern and he might not have you strip-searched by dobermans.

But the bank seems easiest, just go into a local branch and make a withdrawal.  I suppose you could also bring a cashiers check and cash it at any local bank.

and I don't care to go through that again.

Most ATMs will give a grand a day now, so you could get your $2,000 in just two days, but if that is not good enough, ask your bank for a cashier's check for the amount and cash it at any bank in the city you are going to

I travel to Vegas probably four times a year and generally will have 6 to 10 thousand in cash on me. What can I say I like to gamble and I like to hobby.

I always put the cash in my check book with a rubber band around it. I always carry a small shoulder bag (man purse) as a carry on and run it through TSA machine at the passenger check point. I have never had a problem.
Of course I never let it out of my sight except for when it is inside their scanner.

Always keep it on you and in sight. Don't just put it in the tray. Keep it contained in a bag. NEVER put it in checked baggage. Stuff disappears from checked baggage far more frequently than carry on where you can keep stuff in eyesight always.

There are thieves who rummage through other people's carry ons looking for whatever they can knowing that no one can tell exactly which carry on item it is they are rummaging through.

Some relatives told me they think that's how they lost several items from their carry on bags including medications.

When I travel with cash, it's in my pockets.

Maybe if you don't mind giving up your leg room, you could put it under the seat in front of you

Put your bag in the overhead acroos the asile from your seat.  That way you can keep an eye on it

Not only to keep an eye on it, but it makes for a much easier grab and go when your isle is up for deplaning rather than having to exit and do an about face to grab your bag.

Out of sight while in the scanner and still during any other game the TSA perv wants to play.  Free to the fast taker.

First of all try to keep your wad as compressed as possible by converting to larger bills....50s & 100s
If it's really a large amount , like over 2k make more than one stash. Split it up in two or three . In other words don't put all the eggs in one basket like your wallet.
Some can go in billfold.
Some in pant pockets and breast pocket if wearing a sport coat and perhaps some in your carry on
Before going through security transfer everything into your carry on which you never let out of your sight.
Have some prepared niches in the bag to stuff the $$$$. Maybe a small hip hugger for the wallet , shoes you can stick a wad in etc......
But , be damn sure you have nothing in that carry on to warrant an examination!

Once through security find a remote area and carefully replace the various wads strategically in pockets , socks ( yeah , I've done the money in the bottom of my shoe thing , sorry ladies , lol)...... Etc....

Upon arrival of your destination , enjoy the fruits of your labor !

To be honest, I've never thought about it, I always have some hobby/gambling cash in my planner in my backpack, there has never been a question or a problem, I travel a lot, and I mean a lot and I've never seen anyone have a problem with cash at TSA. I'm not sure about this, but it seems to me that I've heard under 10K raises no alarms. My bank is a national bank, so I don't need to have a bunch of cash on me, 2 or 3 k at a time. When I get to my destination, I can go to the bank and get more.

Now if you're talking accross the pond, then perhaps you'll need more cash, but I'm quite confident that you can wire transfer cash from your bank to a foreign bank quite easily if you are concerned about carrying a large amount.

Good luck and have fun.

Is it really that strange to carry $2K in cash on your person?

2K is not much to carry around, especially in big bills. Just keep it in your pocket when going through security, it's not going to set off the metal detector.

When you walk through the full body scanner with anything in your pockets TSA will pull you out for a pat down. I always leave my cash in a zippered inside pocket of my messenger bag carry on. I've never had a problem.

Because we can't have anything in our pockets.  Everything goes thru the scanner.  Even dirty tissues.

Nothing need to come out of your bag then.

There is nothing illegal about carrying large amounts of cash when traveling. Keep it in a secure place in the carryon bag you check and make sure you don't enter the screener until your bag is going through the scanner. That way you can carefully watch it go through.

Yes, thank you for the clarification. If it is that large an amount. He had mentioned $2K or so

Really?

Banks will report when you either deposit or withdraw $10K or more in cash (or cashlike instruments), and customs will care about entering the country with $10K or more in cash, but I didn't think there was any obligation of any kind to declare carrying more than $10K on a domestic flight or in or out of an airport, to TSA or anyone else.

On the original question, if you have an account at a national bank (i.e. Bank of America or equivalent), leave it in the bank, walk in at your destination, and withdraw $2K (or whatever), added advantage is that you can ask for 100's in places where the ATMs don't have that option.  I do this fairly often.  Fallback is a few $K in a zipped up opaque bag in an inner pocket in my laptop case, right next to my hobby phone.  You'd have to rummage around a lot to find it, but if you stole my laptop case I'd be unhappy ...

I have flown domestically with over $10K in cash and it is perfectly legal.  Think about it... how many people fly to California or Florida each year to buy a collector car, or go to set-up at a trade show in Vegas or NYC and need cash to pay a dozen different vendors?  This happens every day.  Just make sure you have most of it safely situated in a hidden-away spot in your carry-on bag

Banks have to report $5k deposited over a few day period.  That's why they ask for ID when depositing $2k or more.

Domestic travel has no limits on how much cash you carry.
Just put it in your carry on and go about your business without looking like you are scared of losing something.

I think the 10000 limit only applies for international travel.  I might be wrong though

My dates are more expensive than the ATM will spit out.

Simple problem solved I guess.. Safer than carrying 10,000 cash.. Also, if you need a lot of money, get a cashier's check.  It's safe and it is can be cashed at a bank once you reach your destination.

There are plenty of places around the world that have never seen a travelers check.  I have not bought one since perhaps 1991.  But, I have been places with co-workers when they have had their checks along with ID and their ATM cards stolen... and they were totally screwed.  Luckily I had cash to bail them out.

I travel a lot, and always have a fair amount of cash going through security and have never had an issue. I've never heard of anyone having an issue  for that matter. Take large bills keep them on you, and you can always exchange them for smaller denominations if you need to.

As others have said, most banks will adjust your ATM max as well.

Travelers checks are great if you're taking a trip to the '70s.

Never put anything you don't want to live without in overhead. Wallet, keys, passport. No time to retrieve in the event of emergency

Get a needle and thread and sew the Benji's into the inner pocket of your sports jacket.

Wonder why, in all my travels, that I've not thought of that... Brilliant!

LOL, this sounds like a 30-minute discussion just waiting to happen with a TSA supervisor to me. The OP is taking $2K in cash... people take more than that to Vegas for bachelor party drinks.  Frankly, 20 Benjamin's in a wallet or briefcase is not an issue that will cause TSA to even blink.  But, them sewed-into your sports jacket is likely to cause you to miss a flight explaining why you felt the need to attempt to hide the $ from them.  ;)

Yes .. I can just hear the TSA Super calling a treasury agent to check the bills

...when I traveled overseas.  I had almost 10K (not for hobbying) and put it in a white envelope in my carry-on.  I don't think it was the money, but something triggered the TSA to search the carry-on after it passed through the X-ray.  The guy just rifled through the bag and didn't care about the envelope.
