Carlsbad to Record *ALL* Cars in and out of Cityangry_smile

Noticed an LA Times article about this - city is proposing to photograph all traffic in and out of the city. Carlsbad is popular with some providers - might have implications?

This has implications far outside of providers being tracked. At that point they'd literally be tracking everyone.

Granted, they're likely not competent enough to use this data to do anything too nefarious, that doesn't mean that it will always be this way.

Do you have any idea of how many different ways a person could be tracked already?

Road cameras have been in existence for eons.
Have a cell phone? It constantly is sending a signal looking for a tower
Use the navigation feature on your phone. Guess what, your giving away your location and if it's left on all the time, a program is collecting your traveling habits.

Use a debit/credit card? Captives your image and date/time stamps it.

So what's the excitement over this?

The excitement isn't new tracking, it's how they're getting better at it.

Even if you aren't tracked, odds are you aren't a special unicorn of a person, so they have your demographic down to a T. That means, they can predict what you're going to do and when you're going to do it, without ever actually looking at you. As the data sets get larger, they get more accurate.

Case in point: https://www.forbes.com/sites/kashmirhill/2012/02/16/how-target-figured-out-a-teen-girl-was-pregnant-before-her-father-did/#4bccb7616668

But it's not always so benevolent: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-intersect/wp/2014/07/01/9-answers-about-facebooks-creepy-emotional-manipulation-experiment/

And this was all back in 2012, the tech has only gotten better since then.

There's also very little legislation limiting how they can use this data as well. Strictly speaking they could host it publicly, they could sell it to the highest bidder, they could give any number of Orgs access that wouldn't normally.
