Only from those who don't how to properly configure their PC's. Most PC's in this world are configured with Windows default configuration shipped by Microsoft. Since everyone knows every one's else's configuration, it is easy.

If you change the configuration to protect yourself, then it is not easy. If interested, send me an email with an email address other than TER, I will send you a document that help you configure your PC's.

Before, everyone go up in the arms and start crying wolf and malicious intent to collect your email addresses, I can care less if you configure you PC's securely or not.

Providers that have their won web with their registered IP addresses should consider getting the addresses unlisted from the Who is database. This will stop all tracing capability from anyone. Most registration authorities such as Network Associates will un-list your IP and you the personal you gave them to get the address for $10/year. I know about Network Associates for sure since I have few IP addresses registered with them.

If you take few configuration changes as precaution, you can protect yourself.

There is a poster on this board who wants you to back channel him for everything, i would beware of this seeing that he has no reviews. This sounds like someone wanting your personal info. id it once i will never BAck Channel another person on this board.

How can someone get your personal info if they don't give it to them? I like PM b/c I can discuss things that I wouldn't want to be seen by everyone my.02

you will be amazed what i can get from you from an email address. Even in you think it is safe.

ip addresses can allow someone to track you down to your neighborhood

I always use yahoo

I wrote someone a nasty email when I was 21 for harassing my girlfriend and he tracked me down to neighborhood

he was a firefighter divorcing the poor woman but it still happened.

Wow, I happened to be checking this board out because I made a post on the TX board why Carolina ( much smaller yet active TER) has a whole forum yet TX is not broken down. Seems like you guys have A LOT of chicks to choose from, lots of reviews as well. I noticed Trojanlarge's post and he couldnt be more right.

For what it is worth, I had a party planned with two providers to visit myself and 4 other hobbyists, and ANOTHER provider happened to intercept the email invite and cancelled on behalf of one of the providers, who verified on phone she NEVER sent the email. Ultimately, her Yahoo account was broken in to, the 2nd provider who I had invited had BOTH her websites hacked the next day, and the guilty party (uninvited with a long standing feud with one of the providers invited and emotionally infatuated with one of the guys who WAS invited) successfully covered all the tracks down to 'spoofing' as my Intel friend told me the IP's of letters sent to Yahoo to change passwords. So when Trojanlarge says you can get a lot from an email, he is right.  This example just proves that in today's day and age, email is not safe like it once was, I ONLY am using the telephone and PM systems within TER or other local boards to prevent this crap from happening. As a furthur precaution, Yahoo told us that the password to break in to an account is very easy to find IF the yahoo user is using a word from the dictionary, there are software programs that ANY crap for brains can run that within 10-15 minutes can run whats called a dictionary search until a match is found. Same goes for AOL and hotmail etc. I also had my emails broken in to. Make sure you know who you are emailing with.

Just wanted to share this problem, and reinforce the statement that backchanneling is often a method PREFFERED by those with malicious intentions, hackers are well aware that TER, TBD, and ASPD all have tracking software as well as many other tools available to them, so of cource they want you to backchannel, no one wants the ' cops' around when they are going to pull some sh$T. It is a way to remove a ' witness' to a ' crime' ....and by the way, at least in TX, breaking in to emails IS a crime...

PM systems are safe, best to use them, in MY opinion if a hobbyist will not use a PM system within a website or a provider won't either, perhaps it is best to move on to one that will, trust is important, sneaky folk should be avoided, they are trying to circumvent for a reason.

I was advised to put two common words that have nothing to do with each other together for future passwords, such as ' mapstadium' or ' foodphone', though stupid sounding, it a) avoids using personal names and b) prevents people searching for passwords from finding them.

Because some of the guys are married who were coming to my party were put at risk by this, the party was cancelled and two ladies who I really enjoy are out a considerable amount, all because of an email hacker.

Good luck to the Blue Devils and Tar heels, I think one of those teams is here in Austin now...Apologies to any of you who take offense to the carolina post I made in TX, was trying to make a point on size of the states, not quality of ladies or posters :)

The title of this thread is ' Re:BACK CHANNEL BEWARE./ What do you think? '

I think the title says it all, no need to think, if you have to ask, you already know the answer, if not, use my story as a future example of just how IP and email are not 100% secure, both these ladies who are regulars of mine had their 1)personal and 2) business lives violated, if I sound angry, sorry. It just wasn't fair, to the ladies more so than the guys, the depend on anonimity MUCH more than the guys.
