Some places are getting on board with that

Sorry...I've got to get this off my chest.

I'm constantly amazed by the men who do not wash their hands after using a public bathroom.  I have a girlfriend who says she sees women doing the same thing.

It's not like I'm really watching people in the bathroom.  But, Damn.  A guy stands next to you at the urinal in Mortons, takes a piss, and turns and walks out.  A guy at the airport comes out of the stall and heads right out the door.  A guy at the movie theatre finished his business, takes the time to check his look, rich his shirt, but never bothers to wash his hands.  THAT GUY in the office who doesn't wash and then wants to shake your hand...get the fuck away from me you dirty bastard!!!

WTF!!!

Weren't people taught basic hygiene by parents or in school.  Or do people just not give a fuck?!  If there is a rationale for NOT washing your hands, please explain.

Thanks for listening?

This, like most important issues of earthly concern, was covered in Seinfeld, thusly:

well if you screw someone in the bathroom, it is germane to this board.

however i agree w/mr. fisher, you should always wash your hands after using the bathroom, even your own bathroom at home.

a 20 second wash is little price to pay to stem the transmissions of germs and bacteria and viruses.

and be sure to wash your dick after it's been in someone's mouth.

ok j/k on that last part but good hygiene, in every part of your life, always helps.

I assume that my penis is the cleanest of my most outward appendages, why would I need to wash my hands after touching my clean dick and not a single think in the germ filled restroom?

I still wash my hands after I take shit.

It's everything else you've touched along the way- the bathroom door handle, the wall, whatever else, which has most likely been touched just before you came in by someone who didn't wash their hands after taking a sh*t. ;)

...of the public restroom door that the guy who didn't wash his hands just did.  That's why I use a paper towel to grab the handle, open the door and toss it into the trash can on the way out.

Biggest spreader of germs in the bathroom is the door knob on the way out. It's coated with shit. By contrast, pee is sterile unless someone has a bleeding urinary tract. I guess you are not into golden showers, tant pis.

BTW do you know what happens if you wash your hands and then dry them in the "sanitary" hot air blower? You create a shit dust storm in the bathroom.

according to something I read on the net recently.  (You know that if its on the net, it must be true, because the government would never allow anything on the net that wasn't true, right?)

In any case, as much as I love trees, I'll grab the paper towel if I have a choice.

...I should know - I hang around men's rooms all the time.  :-D

Can I get one for my incall and put it on a vertical slider for guys to dry their penis? Lol, only half kidding, guys. It just looks like it would work pretty good, though.

The problem there is that it's not merely the bathroom door handle but virtually any doorknob or surface -- like you work desk and keyboard, office phone, break room counter top.

Here's one that's going to really bother some. Is you toiled less than 6 feet from the bathroom sink where your toothbrush hangs? Then you probably have the splash from both peeing and flushing on your tooth brush.  Wonder how many are running to throw the current on out and are telling themselves to leave it in the medicine cabinet right now?

For those that might not be a quick on the uptake. That "splash" is very fine particles of fluid -- think vapor sized particles -- that's floating through the air. No think about how often the toilets get flushed at you work place, house and public toilets in airports or restaurants/pubs?

...and never (well rarely) get sick. It's why we have immunities built up because of exposure like that daily. There is a danger of becoming too sanitized and actually being sick because of a lack of immunities. Yes I wash my hands but all this hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes in public places isn't really a good thing.

That may or may not be a signal of poor hygiene. Like the punchline from the old joke goes, "I'm from -enter location- and my daddy taught me not to pee on my hands!"

A number of years ago I worked with a Vietnamese guy who ALWAYS washed his hands -- he said it didn't want to get anything dirty on his dick.

Not washing after using the restroom might be a general signal but I wouldn't take it as a determining factor myself.

The stuff is full of ammonia which is a disinfectant.

It's the nasty stuff from around the anus that are the problem

And one hopes there's some toilet paper between hand and shit! ;-)

If not I'm not sure if I want the guy (or girl) washing the evidence off -- I don't think the quick wash at the sink will sanitize and if I see a nasty brown streak on their hand I'll know not to shake it!

a tennis net to a BB.

Wash with hot water and soap for a minute, and dry off with the paper towels, and you'll be half decently clean

I've read that hot water does nothing to kill germs. I do know that hot feels better than cold.

Truly, soap and water do a great job.

Microbiologists have long predicted Triclosan would be a problem because of resistance (and cautioned it should *only* be used in hospital environments and even then, with caution), but now the health & environmental concerns are very legitimate (I've lined to an abstract, and the senior author, Tukey, is very respected in the field - no quack science here). That's another problem with how we establish safety in this country - it's safe until it's not, even when basic scientific common sense should have raised red flags everywhere (for the resistance factor alone).

False that hot water does not kill germs. Hot water definitely kills germs. Most medical equipment are sanitized by autoclave, which is basically steam under pressure. Survivalists and outdoors people boil water to make it safe for drinking. Hot water will kill germs. However, we are talking about water at boiling or near boiling temperatures. Some bacteria is killed at temperatures as low as 140 degrees F, but many require, 160, 180, or even higher (i.e. boiling) The "hot" water that comes out of your tap is about 120, not nearly hot enough to kill anything. In fact some bacteria grow and thrive in the range of 100 degrees and a little higher.

So your blanket statement is false, but if you qualified it, then it would be true. Water that is hot enough to kill germs would do major damage to your skin. Hot water out of your faucet, does nothing to kill germs.

once quipped as we were both taking a piss in a bar urinal "seems to me it would make just as much sense to wash your hands BEFORE taking a piss when you think of what your hands come into contact with during the course of the day".  We chuckled, but there's some truth to it, as well.

So let me take this opportunity to say....and this is why a gentleman should wash his hands when he arrives at an incall with plans of exploration. 😁

In the South we were taught not to piss on our hands.   Lol.

It's not just those who don't wash their hands, but how you wash them too.  Just running your hands under the faucet for a second or two and not using soap like I see many folks do is almost as bad as not washing at all.

That's pretty crappy science they're tossing around unless I'm misunderstanding what the stats were saying.

First though, I'm all for teaching kids and those in developing countries to wash their hands after going to the bathroom, before and after fixing a meal and just in general after handling dirty stuff. Those are both populations that generally have limited knowledge/education about how disease is transmitted. Even if they cannot quite grasp the concepts or simply refuse to believe them the kids will learn a good habit and the populations in the developing countries will notice that those who keep washing seem to say healthier so it's a bit self reinforcing (up until the wash with contaminated water...)

However, their claim "Hand washing promotion probably reduces diarrhoea episodes in both child day-care centres in high-income countries and among communities living in LMICs by about 30%." is a misstatement.

They indicate their sampling produces a rate ratio (RR) of 70% with a 95% confidence interval of .58 to .85. What that means is that the range of 58 to 85 percent has a 95% chance of containing the actual population rate ratio. It doesn't say that the 70% RR of the study is any more likely than any other number in that range.

In other words there's a 5% chance that washing hands is really really good at preventing germs from getting into our bodies or that washing your hands doesn't really do much at all. Moreover, the CDC points out that it's not just after going to the toilet yourself. So if you don't know where the other person's hands have been since the last time they were washed you should be just as put off,  shaking their hand as the case under discussion here unless you really know something about their personal hygiene habits. This is one of the reasons I like the mutual shower routine

The hand washing thing is legit when it comes to disease transfer. If you have 100 million germs on your fingers and wash your hands with plain soap and water, you will reduce the germ count significantly; let's say down to 1 million.

If you pick your nose or your friend's nose with only 1 million germs on your fingers, fewer germs will transfer and the likelihood of infection will be lower than if you did your picking with 100 million germs on your fingers.

(I said "nose" but you can substitute other finger cavities and the same argument applies.)

When you aren't near a sink and soap, the hand sanitizers work by killing germs.
