I used to see... her SO would call her between appts. Often she would have me stay for company after play time was over... & she'd shush me... sometimes he'd bring her lunch... I think he had a factory job & was not a bum.

The client might be trying to gage his or her drama risks or this may be a sly way for them to know your relationship status. He may be interested in you beyond the hobby. I have had providers ask me if I had a girlfriend or if I visited providers a lot.Lol

I think we all dream of being the boyfriend or the husband of a provider because most of us have enjoyed the company of most of the providers we have met. The fantasy is there, but where would our heads be? I am not jealous, but would it bother me if my SO was providing as long as we still could share sex and intimacy? I think it would be fine, but what is the reality, hence the question when we are with an exceptionally appealing provider: Does she have a boyfriend, is he OK, are they OK?
I would not ask that though I know two of my ATFs had boyfriends who became finances, and then husbands. At last information (many years ago but a number of years after their marriages) they were happy and doing well.
It is a rude question that I would never ask, but it comes from finding the provider we are with so appealing that it leads us to wonder.
I usually stay clear of ladies with B/F or S/O , they have the habit of putting your lady friend in a bad mood, no 1. In addition they can add a level of a unsafe conditions, you know he is sleeping around and probably not using protection when he comes home? Thirdly you never know where he is hiding? Personally have witnessed all the above!

I certainly think it's an odd question to ask unless you've got some level of relationship beyond a first visit. It might also be one of those questions the love-struck newbies ask as a round about way of asking if you're seeing someone
In my case, I have long been fascinated with sex workers. And I admire them. And I minored in psychology in college, so I'm one of those people who wants to know "what makes you tick." That being said, I don't barge into a first appointment with someone and start "the interview." In the case of my ATF, I shared a lot of personal info with her, while asking light and non-invasive questions. As our chemistry and trust deepened over time, she volunteered more info and answered more personal questions. I suspect that at least some of the clients who ask "annoying" questions are just curious and/or genuinely interested in you as a person, not just a cum receptacle.
Not a question I would ask. Not my business. However if I were to ask it is probably because I am a nosy SOB
