Some really nice neighborhoods have emerged for people who don't like a long commute to work. and it's very racially mixed.

I beg to differ about North Raleigh! Ask anyone who lives inside the beltline, the old Raleigh money area... they'll tell you North Raleigh is where the nouveau riche live, the transplants. It's not as WASPY. Mid town is a very upscale area as well.

So I thought I'd ask, Can anyone suggest the good areas to live in? Looking around Cary right now but open to suggestions. Also, who are the must see providers?

Thanks for any input.

Along Glenwood Ave going toward downtown,  Ridge Road to Wade Ave,  beautiful area but Expensive.  Stay away fro East Raleigh, (Knightdale,  Wendell), and South Raleigh.

Lots of transplants there, lol. And Cary too! ;-)

The downtown area has gotten way cool with lots of condo and lofts! Oakwood is beautiful as well and oh so close to downtown Raleigh.

Many great choices depending on finances, age, married or single, ect!

Then there's 200 N Blount St but it's not for sale...or is it, lol? (JK)

xoxo,

It all depends on what you are looking for:
- Cary = Rich white people, families
- Apex= Land of soccer moms and mini vans, white people who cant afford to live in Cary
- North Raleigh= Older Raleigh suburbs, strip malls, families, more integrated than Cary
- 5 points= closer to downtown, white middle-upper class families
- Oakwood= historic district, close to downtown, adjacent to some very sketchy neighborhoods
- Glenwood South= Mid 20's urban, singles, lofts, condos
- Downtown Raleigh= Urban, younger, singles, people who work in DTR and make $
- East Raleigh, South East Raleigh, South Raleigh= More integrated, more minorities, more affordable housing, lots of new-ish neighborhoods/new construction but less amenities (shopping, restaurants, etc)
-  Garner= Country folk that were previously outside the grasp of urban sprawl, but now find themselves closer and closer to it. Think trucks, mudflaps and acid washed jorts.
- Durham= Depends on who you talk to. People who live there, love the Bull City. I don't live there...I think it's a shithole.
- Chapel Hill= College students, liberal types, if you want to own real estate there you need to have $$$
- Carboro= Put on your Birkenstocks, smoke a fatty and...I forgot what I was going to say. I'm hungry.

You can check out sites like citydata for more info on specific neighborhoods. Get yourself a good realtor, and welcome to Raleigh! Tons of transplants here, myself included.

great post!  Spot on.

Durham has a bit of a bad reputation in the Triangle, mostly from experiences of a decade or more ago. However, it has a lot to offer: a surprisingly diverse cultural landscape for a city its size, the best independent theater in the Triangle (the Carolina Theater: if you're a film buff, check out the Retro series that are presented three Fridays a month), a very good AAA baseball team, the best college basketball (men and women) in the state, plenty of dining options (including an army of food trucks). Finally, it still has character, unlike some towns in the area (Stepford, er, Cary).

Thank you for all the honest input. Feel like I learned more about the area from this board in 5 minutes than everything I've read online (a few hours worth)before this. I spent a few days visiting the sites and exploring neighborhoods earlier this week and I think my family is really going to love living there.

Depends on what you're looking for. The South Durham area is suburbia and very affordable. The city is like any city and I wouldn't recommend it. Providers. Lots of really good ones and a few who visit often. I'd say Keen (when she tours) is a must see. For a mind-blowing double, Sloan and Lacey (touring) will rock you world. There are far too many "must-see" providers in the area to list them all here. Good luck and welcome!

You have the Triangle Town Center, your close to a major Highway and you have everything there, more modern homes as well . . Cary is awesome, great food places and shopping but it depends on where you work and how far you want to commute traffic can be a bitch in rush hour. Yikes! North Raleigh is not that Congested which I like ;)

Hope to see you around soon!
