I'm quite sure many hobbyists are arguing with their own alias in some posts.

I agree with Mr. R that some degree of anonymity may preserve a reputation with providers as well. We've all seen how personal opinions, no matter how thought out and presented get shredded depending on the sensitivity of a topic.

How many of you are on the RO board? Why does it exist if not to discuss topics in a more discreet setting than the general boards?

I know the reason users use and alias. My question is why does TER have the capability? Our user names shield us from those on the outside. If you are afraid to write something without using an alias, why write it? If someone believes in something enough to write it, then own it and stand proud for your position.

I welcome all opposing views. Opposing views using an alias will carry less weight, of course, as they should in all cases.

correct.  When I post, if  don't think I can take the heat for what I'm going to say, then I won't say it.  I have only used my alias once and that was in a PM to a guy that I thought might be hostile to a question coming from CDL.   When their use is benign, I don' really have a problem with people using them, but when they are used to make personal attacks, I think the alias systems emboldens a lot of sissies to act like they are men.  Just my opinion, and I'm sure those using alias' will disagree, but it is difficult to make a manly argument when you're hiding under a rock and hurling insults at other members.

It gives the hobbiest some anonymity with the providers.  If you come across as a prick or otherwise negative person, providers mark you as a "dont see", imo.  Hobbiest to hobbiest, another story.....there is no anonimity

If you expect some blowback from a provider, take the discussion to the RO board.  Benign, humorous or sarcastic posts we get on this board from alias' like Epicuris are not offensive to anyone, but using the alias to attack someone can only described as a "cheap" shot, unbecoming to anyone with an ounce of integrity.  If you feel someone deserves an attack, do it like a man and use your real handle.  Providers actually appreciate a guy who has balls.  They come in handy during the session.

I've never been called benign, and I don't particularly like it.

that in the most complimentary way.  "Benign" in that you don't viciously attack someone using your alias.  No question the humor and sarcasm you provide is an asset on this board.  So . . . don't get your panties in a bunch.

kinda like a tumor...

Those boys are brutal, lmao.
Back to the point, dont personal attack someome using a alias, bad form....

There are times when the use of your main handle could identify someone (because of review history, etc) when that is neither the intent or desirable.  In the course of meeting people, we sometimes learn intimate details that ought not to be public information.

However, some people on the TER boards take pleasure in raucous and incendiary comments, and they hide behind an alias.  I am very tolerant of remarks people make on the boards, and I don't take most comments too seriously, but occasionally, someone says something that is frankly disturbing to me, so I see why they want to hide.  Then, there are some that express intimate styles that may or may not appeal to all; although in my mind, if someone is put off by something you like, it's much better to know beforehand so one can avoid a meeting rather than have a subpar time.

I really enjoy the back and forth that occurs on this board. Especially with locals. There have been posts by providers that interested me in them so much more than their add sites did. I subsequently saw them and am ever so glad I did. And, I have had providers reach out to me too.

On the other hand, a while back, there was a provider, who happens to have a twin who is also a provider, I wanted to see. Then she began posting comments that were nothing but rude and insulting to other posters and readers alike. I decided I wasn't going to pay good money to spend time with someone I knew to be disrespectful and a bitch.

When a person reveals their true character, decisions come easier.

on the other hand i have a specific interest, totally benign, that upsets the majority of the general population, ergo i never mention it on these boards.

but if i'm approaching a lady about a date it is the first thing (second, actually, after my references) that i mention in my initial email.

so there really doesn't need to be a platform through which you can spout unpopular opinions that you are unwilling to put your reputation behind.

Is to avoid alienating women that you potentially want to see in the future but what's the use of partaking in a discussion board anonymously?

The part I can't stand is having posts denied by the moderators when they are right in line with every other post on the thread - that is super annoying...

why would someone want to express an opinion about the hobby in a forum about the hobby and not stand behind it?

unless of course they want to show one side, an acceptable side, to the people of the hobby here on ter (via their original handle) and then be two-faced and demeaning and dismissive (via the ter alias).

it is especially disgusting on the general discussion board, where there are several literal trolls who love to do nothing but pick fights and insult people behind the ter alias.  it would be different if they ever had anything of substance to add to the discussion, but (without naming names...er, i mean, without naming aliases) all they do is stir up trouble.

read the attached article to see how science proves trolls are psychotic.

i much prefer browsing the regional boards, people are more polite, and more prone to discussing actual substance

I resemble that remark, nyuk, nyuk.

you're not psychotic, epi... you are just having fun, you don't pick fights or state the contrarian position just to stir up trouble.
