Social Media: AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE that it is

The pernicious, multi-tentacled, invasive, disgusting Facebook.  It has been discussed previously, many times.

"Settings" and "filters" will NOT PROTECT YOU from the digital reach of Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and all of the other behemoths who are there to connect your digital dots whether you want or intend them to or not.

Almost any trail on your computer can become interlinked with other trails. Buy a teddy bear for your 10-yo niece on Amazon and the next you know she is friended on some Provider's Twitter feed that you thought was separate because you used a fake name when you logged in.

These companies have tentacles that will touch you everywhere, and not in a good way.  They are NEFARIOUS.  They can expose you and ruin your life in pursuit of their self-stated goal of connecting everyone in the world -- EVEN IF IT'S AGAINST THAT PERSON'S WILL.

Mouthwash doesn't help, Brillo doesn't help, Mr. Clean Magic Eraser doesn't help.  You need to AVOID the stain of FB, Twitter and the others completely.  That's the only real protection

I was somewhat surprised when a provider showed up in a Facebook "Do you know...." email in her civilian persona complete with all the domestic stuff... cats..  dependents.... as someone I might know along with a number of other random people that I have a vague second or third hand relationship with.   And - being facebook - put in a nice button to "friend" her.

Not something I am going to do. And not what this post is about.

How in the heck did Facebook figure out this connection???  Or do I know someone who knows her IRL...

Has this happened to you?

facebook collects data from your contacts. If you have her number saved as a contact and she has that phone number associated with her facebook. You will get a "Do you know". Btw facebook app on your phone collects data from EVERYWHERE on your phone.

I personally avoid all social media to be safe. Too much online on these days.

A lot of people use their personal emails and phone numbers when contacting providers, and Facebook stores all of that information and allows you to find others with it

for hobbyists to use burner phone or burner phone #.  For that matter you will also need a hobby-only email account. It is especially recommended if you're already on the grid.

That's why I don't use FaceBook or Twitter. Too intrusive.

then at the least, you need to change the privacy settings on:

Who can see my stuff? Keep it on friends and limit past posts.

Who can send you friend requests? Using friends of friends will eliminate you from showing up on most of those emails

Who can look you up using the email address you provided? Set to friends

Who can look you up using the phone number you provided? Set to friends

Do you want other search engines to link to your timeline? Set to n

It causes too many headaches, and sometimes strips you of the fantasy that so many have come to love. Or! keep a little black book lol

my Facebook friends. One of the swinger ladies posts her daily bible verse of the day. Her husband likes to watch while a guy and girl do her. The provider I trust and she wanted to follow our year long trip around the world.

Especially when the FB app is open on your phone its tendrils go everywhere, doesn't matter if your hobby email/phone is linked to it or not. It's just the "you may know" ribbon, you obviously don't have to friend anyone on it, or accept a friend request. Way bigger problem for providers than us...I've seen a few real names. I don't care and forget them as soon as I leave the page, but I ain't everybody.

For me - just getting a "you may know" is not a big deal.  I just found it fascinating and wondered if other folks had the same experience.  For her, there is obviously a privacy issue involved.

I am fairly sure she uses a separate "bat phone" - or at least, I hope she does.....  I know we both use "burner emails"

It's because of your username.
It's pompous... I have a hard time convincing myself I'm the shit.
So using names like that only make it worse for me..

I like to try to show myself in my name.
I like to go camping as everyone knows, and I've fended off Wolves. So, I am the Hound

So are wolves a good fuck?
"Pompous" is talking about fending off wolves ...

"Jerk London" would be more fitting ....

How does anybody NOT know this stuff by now?

What he said ^^^

Chances are you guys have a mutual friend or are a friend of a mutual friend.  Just ignore it...don't friend her.  The provider needs to learn how to use security setting on her FB.

From personal experience, it REALLY creeps me out when a client tries to friend me on FB.  I keep personal and professional VERY separate.  The two worlds NEVER mix.  I've put a few people on my "NO" list for trying to get into my personal life.  I respect their personal life as being personal, I appreciate the same respect in return :)
