END OF MESSAGE

Our email server got upgraded at work and now is blocking TER.

Does anyone have any idea of how to do a work around?

If not, I'm going to have to learn how to step up my iPhone game.

Are you sure you want to do this?  Are you comfortable with IT and maybe others knowing that you are browsing TER at work?  Because you should assume that you are being monitored.

however, I am pretty well connected to the boss, but not that well connected where I want to come right out and ask to have TER added to the sites I want to visit.

I'd prefer a discreet work around such as using a proxy server if that could do the trick, but I would need to be led step by step on how to go about that.

You said that you have an iPhone.  If you put it in hot spot mode, and then have your PC connect to it, then you will be off the internal network. Then you should be able to browse anywhere you want.

Really, you are using your work email for this?  You know you have no right to privacy when using your work computer/email.  Something like this can really come back to haunt you.

get unlimited data on your iPhone and hotspot your iPhone!
:)

and also would raise some questions, whereas everyone is pecking away on iPhones nowadays.

A tablet is a lot easier to use than your phone for those of us with "old eyes", and you can get a data plan for it just like your phone.

If anyone asks, just tell them your phone is too small on which to watch porn. I doubt anyone who knows you will be a bit surprised.

The rules on that tablet said:

No picking your nose
No making underarm farts
No crotch scratch in public
No sniffing your finger after you scratch anything below your waste.
No jerking off

Thank God I dropped that one

if you hotspot your iPhone to your laptop while you are walking down a sidewalk, yeah.. you may get a few looks. but only because who uses a laptop walking down the sidewalk. my favorites are the tourists who use their iPad as a camera.

just be sure to invest in a mophie or some other extra batter device.

no one next to you knows that you have hotspotted your phone. there is no big red flashing light. it just looks like you are on a laptop. you can have your phone in your pocket if you'd like. its all wireless. :)

your work may be tracking your computer anyway. Don't use their wireless either.

I have an iPad with a cellular plan.  That is the only way I ever access TER at work.  That too is an alternative.  Or just use the existing iPhone over cell.

This way I can use voice to text and I don't make my finger sore from typing. Try it!

It sucks when it's blocked in hotels, though, because I can't post ads with photos from my phone. Maybe there's a way but I don't know how

You owning a smart phone does!

Did you get the pineapple juice protection for it?

Never use your employer's systems for hobbying purposes.  That means your work e-mail as well.   I suspect that in the wake of Ashley Madison, many will find it wasn't worth being cavalier with their personal privacy and security when they get their pink slips...

Most likely you have signed or agreed to a company code of conduct. They have language that concerns the use of company computers and Internet. Altering their computer to get around the blocking software is probably not allowed.

The monitoring software that is blocking TER was probably sold as a risk management tool. It protects the firm against charges of being a "hostile" workplace or sexual harassment charges. I doubt that is a hill your boss would want to die on.

You maybe well  connected with your boss but unless he/she is the owner they have a boss. In my corporate life I have seen people marched out the door for violating this kind of thing. Their boss couldn't save them because H.R./Legal was driving the process.

Use an IPad or other personal device and stay off corporate resources.

But I don't want to cause any embarrassment if I can avoid it.

So, there are no proxy server work-arounds?

I guess I could look into getting a wireless adapter for my work PC, then using my iPhone's hot spot.

you can buy one for like $5 and windows should find it without any problem as soon as you insert it...

the only thing with any hotspot/bluetooth is that others can see what you call it. but thats the same as a home wifi and being able to see your neighbors. dont call it anything "mrfisherssexline". and make sure you password protect it. :)

if you look under wifi on your phone, you'll just see whatever is in your area there. you'll probably see a few networks that are your coworkers. if you see a double ring kinda thing (the symbol is on the personal hotspot option) that means its someones hotspot. if you do this at random places in big cities you will see names like,
"getyourownwifi"
:gosuckit"
"tom cruise"

its kinda funny what people call theirs just to not be able to see others reactions to it. :)

im so not 2015 technologically advanced. you'll be able to figure this out no problem.

You should add tech and PC counselling to your menu.  Seems like this would be differentiating for you.  :-).  Your input is pretty spot-on in this thread.

I'm more along the lines of, "let me reboot it" when it doesn't work. lol.

Regardless of whether you're good friends with the boss or not, your IT dept configured the servers to block certain website.  If you try and download software, you'll most like be foiled.  There really is no way around it.

Your best bet is to use a personal device that is not attempting to use your company's infrastructure.

Thanks to wonderful TER member who PMed me and gave me instructions on how to download TOR.

Thank you masked man

Congratulations to you then.  Lots of companies are changing their IT policies and protocol to protect themselves.

We usually have at least 3 major system failures a year (The last one was only 3 days! 8o) and countless minor ones.

Now, not to see ungrateful, but I have one complaint so far about using TOR.

Previously when using IE, each time I opened a post, the color of the post changed so that I knew I already read that post and didn't have to open it again, but now that is not happening.  Is there some setting somewhere that causes that to happen, and if so, does anyone know where that is and what I need to do in order to get back that feature?

Thanks again for all your indulgence

you can jokingly say to one of the tech guys at work,

"but now how will we watch porn ????"

and see who gives you the "busted" eye. they will surely help. :)

Try the attached link.  You can try to download and install on the computer where you want to use it, but that may not work depending on what permissions you have.  If it doesn't, download it on your own computer and install to a USB stick (run the installer and change destination to the USB stick).  Then plug the stick into any computer (assuming USB sticks are not blocked) and launch the tor browser from it.

That should work unless your IT dept is really good and has blocked Tor at the firewall (most are not).  As a bonus, anything you do within the Tor browser is encrypted so it cannot be tracked or read by anyone monitoring network traffic.

Do not take this to mean you are completely safe to use this at work though.  It is possible, although not likely, that your IT dept could be monitoring your computer via other methods such as key logging or screen captures, and nothing will save you from that.

Credential: I'm an IT Engineer

The first I mentioned above which is that the color of the posts do not change after I have read them.

The second I just discovered when I tried to send a message to Administration and could not get the CAPCHA to work.  I got a long error message about some kind of strange emissions from my computer or similar goggledegook.

Any work-arounds for these problems?
