being lost for hours in NYC trying to get to a modeling gig with my mom as a child, seeing those ads in the back of the village voice and my mom telling me they were dating ads lol.

We still have opportunity to visually check you out a lot of the time, especially when we're at a hotel. On top of that we have all the resources on the net.
I think the internet has leveled and raised the playing field for everyone. In the scope of things all these sites are still in their infancy. I hope as time goes by things will be more organized and centralized. Especially for us providers...

I remembered in my 20's getting an escort use to be like this in NYC. You would find an ad in the back pages of Village Voice. If someone catches your eye, you would call the tel#. She would talk to you for a bit and if she is comfortable with you. She would tell you to go to a certain corner with a telephone stand next to it (remember those). Her in-call is somewhere near by and she has a clear view of you standing at the corner. If she is ok with what she saw, the phone booth next to you would ring and she would tell you where to go. If she did not like what she sees or think you might be L/E, you would be standing there like an idolit for some time. Back then, I think it was the providers that have most control of the situation. Some of the veterans here can point out other methods, but you get the idea. Now, with the internet, TER, P-411, etc. I think the tables have turned and it is the hobbyist who have much more control then the providers. We cruise the net to see who we like and we can book the apps without them knowing much about the client. I understand that there are different levels of screening (to me it comes down to oks from your peers, not on any blacklist site, or if the lady is thorough, she would look at the reviews of the potential client-but that only states what he likes in-terms of sex). I think if you ask some of the women back then that she would be conducting her business this way with the internet. I am willing to bet a lot of them would say "no thanks". Are the providers a lot more ballsy in terms of risk now? Where do you think this industry would evolve to from here? Or are we in the golden age of the industry for the clients?

You think a 30 second look see from the 8th floor of a high rise in NYC is better than all the info that can be gathered about a john from other girls, personal info, work info, verification sites, etc

The client has the benefit of sites like TER to find reviews, as well as  check out a provider's site and see her photos, etc.

The provider can insist on references and get them within hours so she feels safer.

I would never want to go back to the system you described, which system I used for about 30 years

I would occasionally buy the local ad papers.  There were several with less discrete names than Village Voice (or Phoenix or Real Paper).  Some are still around on the newsstands / Video stores in NY but I don't remember the names.  Do you think I wanted to hold onto those rags in my briefcase or car for more than a few hours?  It was buy the paper, hope to find something reasonable while reading it on the street or in a fairly public place and, yes, stand out like sore thumb at a phone booth (and hope that it was working), hope for the best and dispose of the newspaper in the trash.  If there were no answers or nothing promising in the available time window, it was trash the paper and try again another day.  There was no easy way to plan in advance without accumulating a paper trail.

Yesterday had its charms, but today is better.

(You want yesterday?  Just BRING BACK THE HARMONY THEATERS (NYC)! and I'll be happy.

I was introduced to it when an associate told me about it. San Francisco must have been different from NYC because the quality agencies were talked about and referred to by us guys. In those days there was no need for acronyms. It was just called having sex.

Well, once..with a lady I knew several years ago, and we played out a ho pick-up she fantasied about outside the 14th St. station in NYC.  Took her to the Liberty, and we had a champagne bath in the rooms there that provide that.  :)
