What about hurricanes?

Names help with hurricanes for historical reference. You can talk about Hugo, Irene, Floyd, etc., and most who were there know what you mean, even if they don't remember exactly which year they hit.

This one is called Leon. I guess we have had 12 named storms already this year?

All an effort to boost TV ratings I suppose. What is anything without a name? My favorite women would just be "that foxy redhead with amazing nipples" instead of Ginger or Christina Hendricks from Madmen.

I'm in Charleston SC...any fine ladies around today?

Got it in one. It's a MSM ploy to boost ratings. They think they need to give them names to make them sound important. Because you know that the average TV viewer isn't smart enough to know that storms are important unless they give them a hook.

I thought OC was another name for a Greek trip :-)
