For a moderately intense but no pressure intro, search for Paddles nyc and attend one of their social events.  Ideally with an exploratory friend, and dressed public ok but a little kinky.  If you're looking for a lower key intro, search for a bdsm "munch" in your area - it's a longstanding term for kinky people getting together socially at a restaurant or something without any expectation of play.  I've not been in ny for a while, but remember a pretty vibrant scene.
