Back when pimps earned their keep

My first experience was back in the 70's (even before the advent of alternative newspapers - at least in my town). Took on the task of arranging "entertainment" for a bachelor party. Not an easy thing to do.

Choices were (1) - finding someone off the streets (with all the risks that entailed).

(2) - strip clubs - they weren't the glitzy places that are common today. Many, if not most, strippers doubled as prostitutes. And you had the advantage of being pretty sure the stripper wasn't a cop. But it wasn't easy to develop the level of trust needed to book an outside the club appointment - for a bachelor party no less - without at least being a regular at the club.

or (3)  find a pimp.

It turned out that most people were only about 2 degrees of separation from a good pimp. In most workplaces there was someone who "knew somebody".

Good pimps had a stable of some pretty decent ladies - and a network of "publicists" in all walks of life. One of my coworkers introduced to a "publicist" who worked in my company - who, in turn, introduced me to the real life pimp (and also vouched for me).

The pimp met with me, showed me pictures of several ladies and told me a little bit about them. I made my choice and paid in advance (that was the only way he worked). He let me know that he would "hold me personally responsible" to keep my  guests in line and that I was to call him immediately if things started to get out of hand or if she decided she wanted to leave (remember - there were no cell phones back then either). The "publicist" let me know that the pimp had the muscle to take care of his girls and that I would be wise to take that responsibility seriously.

He dropped a very attractive lady off at the appointed time. Everyone had a good time. We called him a couple of hours later and he was there to pick her up within a few minutes.

He did a great job - for us and for his lady.

But the advent of the internet has made things SO much easier.

I don't think there's any doubt that the explosive growth of technology the past 20 years has done much to make adult entertainment more "mainstream". While there is still strong opposition from many elements of society there seems to be a greater access and acceptance of this "alternative" life. Sometimes this world at times has a sort of "hip" underground feel to it!! (If you've ever been to a M&G you'll understand why I made that statement LOL!!)

When I compare modern day porn (films, magazines, etc) to the porn of 30-40 years ago it seems like everything that was adult entertainment related in those years had a disreputable, sleazy and dangerous aura surrounding it. My questions are...for those who participated in the "hobby" during the 70's and 80's how much different was the experience? What were the normal procedures (if any) for procuring a date? How much harder was the process? Were STD's more prevalent?

I'd be very interested to hear responses from anyone involved in the "life" during that time---compared to the present day it just seems like it was so much more difficult back then to participate (either hobbyist or provider) safely and with mutual enjoyment!!

In Atlanta and in most major cities agency's advertised in small magazines that were place in the hotels that featured restaurants, sporting events, escort services (VIP Escorts in Atlanta come to mind).  Agency's also advertised in the yellow pages-whatever the source-you made the call-stated your preference-might or might no get it, the gal came to your room, also usually checked ID and would often ask for a plane ticket or rental car info to prove you were at least traveling, that sort of stuff.  STD's were an issue but in the before AIDS days the main concern was the clap-but a lot of BBFS was on the menu for sure if you saw the gal more than a few times and hit it off if and that was your thing, and if you traveled for example to Atlanta, Dallas, Seattle, Houston, Los Angeles, etc...you would be prudent-as you are now-to establish a regular-then at a point start calling her direct to avoid her having to kick back an agency fee-much the same as now-but with the advent of computers and sites like TER it has opened up an entire new world !!! Bottom line-now is an improvement over the 70's and 80's and my points of reference basically began in the 1975-1976 era.

Setting something up was arduous and forget about setting something up a few days away.  It was always come down right away or forget it.

You didn't know who you were going to meet, and the service was much poorer than you find today.

Adjusted for inflation, prices were considerably higher too.

That said, I did have a lot of fun using ads and MPs prior to hooking up on TER about ten years ago.

It is like comparing a horse and buggy with a Bugatti.

is what I used. They would advertise escorts and agencies. Back about 15 years ago they would have a whole page or more of ads under 'Adult Entertainment' or services. Now, the ones that still exist, have maybe a small column of massage ads, both licensed and unlicensed.

Was in the 90s and it was mostly centered around brothels in Greece. It was very "hit or miss" as you could enter one establishment and find a couple of seductive ladies paraded in front of you, or a junkie with a knife (happened to me twice; got  robbed the first time and stabbed the second time).

A few years later I tried the scene in London. I followed up on a few leads from friends who used to live there, but to no avail. Then I attempted the "flyer-ladies" in phone booths. I had no success at first, but then I dropped the accent, used my American name and all of a sudden I had no problems getting dates. Prices were high, performance low, but it got the job done.

Many years later I made my first attempt here in the US. I was shocked when she asked me for references. A few years after that I found myself here trying to figure these things out.

Shady shit to say the least.
I never did partake back then though.
I was caught up in drugs. Plus I was 15.

Yeah, I remember picking up a few copies of those old ad papers back in the late 80's near Times Square.  Found a few providers that way.  Also on the "original" BP when it was still in the back pages of a certain Village newspaper that used its voice...

Saw a few providers that way over the years until I found an agency that I used exclusively for outcalls to my old apartment in Queens.  Used them till I got married.  So that was all about 18-20 years ago no

I see he didn't get the memo either, or he was too busy "making friends" over there to notice. lmao

I was feeling like I was spending too much time here.
Now I know I was.
I may come over there for a vacation Storm

Like backpages, but delivered right to your door.

hung out.  They would come up to you and proposition you asking what you were looking for.  Then it was off to a somewhat slezzy hotel or motel for a romp between the sheets.  Also picked-up strippers at adult clubs and went out to the parking lot and did it in my van.  No GFE in either case.

Things are a more upscale now and much safer.

Clumsy, awkward, lots of mistakes, slow--and that was the good part.

In truth there were some pretty girls and occasionally a good time to be had but for the most part there was no kissing, very very few girls who would have scored an 8 or higher and forget finding specialties such as anal or doubles.  If you were lucky the girl who showed up after you called the ad in the LA Weekly or the Yellow Pages (Yes the freaking Yellow Pages ) was at least female,  a 7 and didn't rip you off.  Anything more and it was as if you'd hit the jackpot.

'd beg to differ with phunhog about "occasional" pretty girls, lack of kissing or specialties. You had to pay your dues and find the action, but once you figured it out, it was different but I think just as good.  There were actually brothels back then, more than now.  In Philly one place was called Gentlemen's Retreat.  They changed locations a lot, so you had to keep an eye on the ads in those little papers.  You got a code word, so they knew you were a previous customer.

When you went, there was always a line up of 5-6 girls. I had my favorites, but at least half were my type, so I felt that I always had a choice. For about 1/2 the going rate now, it was full on GFE plus greek, seemed to be a pre requisite of working there.

I also found an indy that I saw for years that had a small, perfectly decorated efficiency in a very good part of town.  Laurie was adventurous and also full GFE, as well as an avid investor. Her investments hit critical mass, then she was gone.

Then there is Joy's Companions, they are still around and have a selection of ladies.  Free parking at the edge of town, upscale building, comfortable and secure place, selection of ladies.

I'll concede that there were bright spots and I seem to remember a place such as GR and there were one or two good looking girls there but they were inconsistent and always a bit paranoid. And just before I left town I remember finding 2 really hot girls who actually ate pussy.  And there was this one college girl who was probably a 9.  But there were many more dates who were unattractive, overweight, well past their prime, and/or just not into what they were doing.  I remember arranging a double where one girl stole the others watch, meeting a lady advertised by her agency as elegant who was a chain smoker and 60 pounds overweight and don't even get me started on the scary ones.  I  don't remember any of them kissing or otherwise being GFE.  And even though I tried to develop ATFs amongst the handful of attractive ones, none of them was ever around for long.

Yes, the escort-procuring world involved lots of hassles, rip-offs, and inconvenience back in the day, as others are recounting.

OTOH, when I started in th 80s and early 90s it was the golden age of AMPs in the areas of the country where I lived. I mostly stuck to those.

The best AMP's were like the K-Girl agencies of today, only out in the open in a strip mall storefront, with little ads in the sports section of the paper.

Negatives

Well, when it comes to business, it almost ruined my life.

Could have spent the free time in a better way then on the internet.

Positives

Thanks to the internet I met some wonderful woman I never would have met in my hole life.

Conclusion of this topic:  would have more money now with having less fun

My first experience was back in the 70's (even before the advent of alternative newspapers - at least in my town). Took on the task of arranging "entertainment" for a bachelor party. Not an easy thing to do.

or (3)  find a pimp.

It turned out that most people were only about 2 degrees of separation from a good pimp. In most workplaces there was someone who "knew somebody".

He did a great job - for us and for his lady.
