I had similar problems last week after I entered popup hell, including hijacked default page, and inability to link directly to some pages.

I downloaded Spybot Search and Destroy, and CWShredder.

Both free, quick, and no more problems. They found numerous violaters and killed them.

This message keeps popping up on my screen and when it does, it comes up every 10 seconds.

Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.

If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.

Restart Microsoft Internet explorer.

Please tell Microsoft about this prolem.

We have created an error report that you can send to help us improve Microsoft Ineternet Explorer.  We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous.

AppName. Iexlpore.exe
Appver 6.02800.1106
Modname kernel32.dll
ModVer: 4.10.0.2222 offset 0000a388

Then after I send a report to Microsoft, another message pops up saying I have performed an illegal operation with iexplorer at the top.

Anybody want to venture a guess what this is before I call Microsoft and probably spend hours on the phone just to speak to a live person.

Sounds like one of the files that runs IE has been corrupted. Try removing IE and then reinstalling a new copy. Make sure you run a good antivirus program and make sure that you go through the windows updates.
