As a owner of dozens of ties, I'll chime in here.  Fashion is everything in ties.  However, ties don't come in "lengths" like belts, or "sizes" like shoes.  Some may be a little shorter, some a little longer, some are straight down their length, some terminate in an end that is fatter than others - it's all a matter of what the person, and the society in which they wear the tie, like and consider fashionable.

Personally I prefer ties that aren't as fat at the large end, tied in a fatter knot (I love Full Windsors) and a little longer when tied (I like it down to the bottom of my belt buckle).  It seems, right now, that fatter ties with tiny skinny knots and shorter than I like them are in fashion.  To each their own.

Oh, and I absolutely LOVE J. Garcia ties.  As far as I'm concerned you can't go wrong with that collection.  The colors and patterns are fantastic.

What would be the correct size tie for a 5'8", 165 lb. and 40Regular in a suit jacket guy?  I have to buy a tie as a gift and don't understand what he needs.
What's the correct tie size?  3 inches or 4 inches at the bottom?
This is my first time buying a man's tie and he requested one, but any advice from you fashionistas would be appreciated.
I do know, however, I like Gucci ties and (believe it or not) just love Jerry Garcia's ties for their great color.
The guy, by the way, is in his mid-20's.

Thanks for any assistance you can give me on this.

The last time I bought a tie was in September in the men's department of a major department store chain. It was a little less than 4 inches at the bottom. BTW, make sure you get a regular length. I have a long torso, so I buy long ties. The right length makes it easier to tie it the right length.

Ties do not come in sizes... at least not as marketable sizes like pants and shirts.  Some ties are made longer for the longer bodied frame, some are a little wider at the bottom then others... it's just a matter of style.

To be fashionable, how one wears the tie is important, which means the man has to know how to properly tie one.   Go to any men's formal clothing store and they will most likely have a little pamphlet on how to properly tie a tie (there are many ways to tie that little knot).

Important notes:
- The end of the tie (the pointed tip) should touch the very top of the man's belt at the waist. You don't measure this when you buy the tie, it's accomplished when tying it around the collar.

- It is not fashionable (or considered professional) to leave the knot hanging loose at the collar.

- Clip-on and zipper ties are never considered fashionable.  A true gentleman learns how to tie his tie.

Especially the seven-fold tie. It is made of some of the smoothest silk I have ever hung aournd my neck. Why it even feels like some young lady's thighs!!

I have to correct some of the posters.  Now ties are coming in sizes!  At the Men's shop where I by my finer wear I am now able to get ties that match my height and neck size.  However, most ties in department stores come in one size only...Hey, you can't expect men to pick the matching tie and then find the size at the same time can you???
