Bible-Thumping Joe Lieberman Connects Esau with Iran

by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu

Sen. Joe Lieberman, who formerly was a Democratic candidate for Vice President and now is an independent backing Republican presidential candidate Senator John McCain, told a Christian audience that Israel must prepare for war with Iran as Jacob did before meeting his estranged brother Esau. "I am your brother Joseph," Sen. Lieberman told a cheering crowd of Christians United for Israel (CUFI). "Blessed are you in the name of the L-rd."

I am your brother Joseph. Blessed are you in the name of the L-rd.

As the audience waved Israel and American flags, Sen. Lieberman praised his host, controversial Christian and pro-Israel preacher Rev. John Hagee. The Connecticut Senator stated that Hagee reminds him of Biblical heroes such as Miriam and Moses, who are described in the Bible as having made human mistakes.

"You and I and Pastor Hagee all believe in the Bible," Sen. Lieberman told the audience. "We believe in the G-d of the Bible. We love G-d."

Sen. Lieberman, an observant Jew, defended Rev. Hagee, who caused an intense controversy earlier this year by saying that the Bible alluded to the Holocaust as a pre-ordained plan to encourage Jews to move to Israel.

Responding to a campaign by dovish Jews to persuade him not to address the Christians in the presence of Rev. Hagee, Sen. Lieberman stated, "There has been a campaign to stop me, but the bond I feel to Pastor Hagee and to you is much stronger."

Rev. Hagee often cites the Bible to back Israel's right to the Promised Land. Addressing a CUFI convention in Washington last week, he told more than 3,500 people they should be like the Biblical Esther when they lobby Congress for Israel and see themselves as "ambassadors of G-d" on behalf of the Jewish people "until victory comes."

His speech did nothing to allay fears among Jews that his support for Israel has missionary intentions. He stated that keeping Jerusalem united is a step towards the Second Coming, which he prophesized will be heralded by a "Jewish rabbi in side curls and not in a gray flannel suit."

What little respect I had left for Joe Lieberman evaporated when I first read this. It makes me sick to my stomach the depths to which this man who claims to be an Orthodox Jew has debased himself in the name of political expediency.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend?

Feh, with friends like John Hagee, who needs the Arabs?

How is it political expedient for him to back a candidate that:
1) is not in his party (or former party that he still caucuses with)
2) will probably lose

Was it politically expedient for him to lose his own party's nomination as an incumbent senator and have to win as an Independent without receiving Dem funds?  Lieberman speaks his beliefs.  The only time he was a big phony-baloney was when he ran with Al Gore.  My guess is he is still trying to cleanse himself of that experience.

From what I read on the original post, if Leiberman is going to cleanse himself of something, he needs to "cleanse" himself of John Hagee and stop using religion as a campaign platform. Politics and religion don't mix too well, and it tends to draw unwanted attention from the IRS. But that's just my take on it.

Most Jews are not anti-Christian. and Christians have to stop being anti-Jewish (most of them all ready have).

Islam is the enemy.  It's a horrible cult.  And they  want to take over the whole world and turn all non-muslims into slaves or kill them.

It's a waste of time negotiating w/muslims because  they never negotiate in good faith.

The last negotiation Israel did might be the trigger point that starts a monster battle but I'm not as sure as I was a week ago. The muslims broke there word on giving the status and location of a 3rd Israeli soldier. And Israel didn't seem to say to much.

Exchanging live terrorists for the remains of two killed Israeli soldiers is crazy if nothing else is going on behind the scene.

Israel has to bring back the death penalty and start executing captured muslims that have murdered Israelis.  Those terrorists that Israel exchanged should have been executed decades ago.

in order of senority they are :

1. Judaism
2. Xtianity
3. take a wild guess

Political allies, yes; religious allies, no, never have been.

In retrospect, perhaps the phrase "political expediency" was the incorrect choice of words.

I can actually understand his backing of John McCain, with whom Lieberman in general tracks much better than he ever could with Obama. Hell, in many ways *I* track better with McCain than I do Obama. I just can NOT (and WILL not) in good conscience support either man for President. For different reasons obviously.

Cartman, my disgust and contempt comes from his rubbing elbows with John Hagee and other extreme right wing Evangelicals who only support Israel because it goes hand in hand with their belief that Jews MUST accept Jesus as their Savior or be forever damned in the Fires of Hell; and only 144,000 will be saved anyway, with the rest of us fried up into crispy critters. Fuck that noise.

If Lieberman wants to cleanse himself of his VP campaign with Gore, he can do a much better job than bathing in the Baptismal pool with the odious and evil John "The Holocaust was part of Gods Plan for the Jews" Hagee. Fuck that noise.

That's my problem with Lieberman.

Thanks for reading.

The "144,000" is only a symbolic number anyway, taken out of context from Revelation. Hagee is so far out in leftfield with his comments about the Holocaust and the Second Coming that he's still chasing Henry Aaron's home run.
