I know that it is common knowledge that in some of the Asian countries where American soldiors have been deployed to fight wars during the 1900's it was common for Asian women to be employed/used as "comfort women" to provide for the physical needs of these soldiors. There is a lot of controversy around how these women were used and treated both by their own governments as well as the American men but the fact is that this practice did exist several years ago.--Sitara Devi

it's a fact of life that where you find soldiers, you'll find women. I think the term "Comfort Women" is associated most closely with the Japanese occupation of Korea in WWII and the sexual near-enslavement of many Korean women during that period. A situation which still toubles the bilateral relations between Japan and South Korea
I would say sexual "near enslavement" is an understatement. Aside from that I agree with you completely. It definitely affects relations between Korea and Japan, keep in mind some of the women are still alive today.
recently IO saw something about this in the news, and the situation of those women is heartbreaking. the Japanese gov't is barely willing to admit the commission of those events, let alone [for whatever belated good it might do] any official apology or any compensation for the past wrongdoing. as zisk points out, this was the pattern of the Japanese military in all conquered areas of WII.
it occurred pretty much where ever the Japanese military were in control, including various territories.
But estimates do suggest the majority were indeed Korean women, and I think the second highest were Chinese.
