McCain, if not in a landslide at least decisively.

a fair sample of voters.

For one thing, I suspect women are way under-represented; and people who don't have spare change to get laid may be way under-represented, too.

Historically, it usually comes down to the economy.  I have a hard time believing Joe 6-Pack is going to be real cheerful about that by Nov, and the war doesn't seem quite as popular as Vietnam was in 1968.

The Republicans have pretty much made a devil's deal with McCain:  he understands he has to suck up to the religious right and all the traditional stuff, which will involve one hell of a lot of flip-flopping; and they will get over their revulsion with his very public independence, because they know goddamn well that Bush is so incredibly unpopular that their candidate has to campaign as Not-Really-A-Republican.

My county has gone for Democratic presidents exactly twice in all of history.  When you walk into a jury pool - which is heavily skewed to Republicans - and they like it when Obama gets on TV and says we need fewer Bushes - then I don't care if Fidel Castro is Obama's fucking WIFE, the GOP has BIG PROBLEMS.

Now it's true, the Democrats could blow it.  And any party that can pimp veterans against Kerry on behalf of a deserter and a draft-dodger has no shortage of chutzpah, and I am SURE the GOP will be screaming that Obama is everything except white.

The question is whether Josephina 6-Pack will give a shit, and I'm not sure we're the ones who have the best understanding here.  Even the ladies aren't necessarily a good cross-section.

How is the ''magic negro'' gonna win Florida that has the Jewish vote while JIMMA Carter talks to Hamas and gets snubbed by Israel and his pastor Wright supports Palestine.
The stupid gun and religious comment  takes away Ohio and Penn .
Some Reps think Obama may be better to run against now :)

Here's what Republicans need to do - talk about his wife's wardrobe, and how that set off the war in Iraq, and fucked up the economy.

Oh yeah, also you fellows need to remind people how FDR lost the war and turned America socialist, and corrupted baseball too.  They'll clean forget if you don't remind them.

Damn Democrats probably got wimmen voting too!  When they should be happy just getting bent over a knee once in a while!  That's a real crime!

Granted McCain is going to have to suck up at least at little to the Religious Right, all Reps and most Dems have to suck up to the bible thumpers.

It is also true that McCain is running as a Not-really-a-Repulican.The only question is, can McCain resist the temptation to sell out completely to the "real" conservatives. If he can hold out against the loony right and appear moderate he will beat either Hillary or Obama in the GE. The Dems only hope is that McCain tries to prove himself to be a "real" Republican and thereby lose the moderates and the election.

My money says McCain is way too smart to fall into that trap, and the Dems are way too stupid to get their act together as a party to beat him.

and fuckups are enough to offset the apparantely MASSIVE voter revulsion of all things Republican.

Remember the "Silent Majority"?  Most Americans stand by more or less quietly, but that doesn't mean they like what's going on.

It's really hard to get around the facts that (1) the economy is going to be in the tank through the election, and (2) Nobody has articulated a half-assed believable plan for Iraq.

And somebody is complaining about what some preacher says?  Give me a fucking break!

I recognize that I may not be the best sample - my friends likely reflect my views.  But the epiphany came for me in the 1st week of March, sitting in a jury lounge of 200 responsible citizens, in one of the most Republican towns in the USA, listening to the universal approval when Obama comes on TV.

So what I'm wondering here is if people aren't missing the forest for the trees - that the Republicans could lose this one to Nader on a write-in campaign.
