Presidential corruption. Warren Harding is certainly a contender. LBJ/McNamara can claim ignorance w/r/t RVN; but Nixon and Bush2 most certainly cannot.

Furthermore, only a year removed from JFK's assassination, maybe the public didn't want a change in political parties...

It's easy to forget that the vast majority of people didn't see things then, the way they do now, and part of that is because we already forget why we had those opinions then.
1st, we had commies on our mind, and now they THEY are in the dustbin of history, it's easy to forget why, and we weren't entirely delusional here. The Chinese WERE in bed with Stalin, and he DID fuck up half of Europe. We didn't realize that commies were every bit as fucked up as your brother-in-law, because they had kicked a lot of ass, and we didn't know they would fuck themselves - like most everybody else does (thank you, GW!!).
2nd, people look good when they fail at the top of their game. Neither of these fellas would have looked as good if they had moved outside their constituency. People who can run revolutions cannot run peaceful towns - it's not the same skills.
The fact is, nobody is ever gonna solve all the problems these guys complained about, because there is a flip side to those problems, and going to any extreme creates its own problems.
So I'd leave well enough alone, and leave those fellas in their graves.
