I agree, McCain is definitely no Democrat, actually, he's

a very far right guy, certainly on social issues...He's pro-life (probably favors amendment to ban abortions, well, all Republicans do except for Lincoln Chafee), he likes "strict constructionist" judges, which is a conservative code word for judges who will vote for the conservative position on any issue...He gave a commencement address at Falwell's Liberty University last year probably pontificating on the usual right-wing rhetoric like "Hollywood is evil, Howard Stern is awful, & porn is dreadful". etc. - something along those lines....

McCain masks it well, but I don't know why conservatives don't like him, as he is a VERY far right guy....If he's a centrist, then Paris Hilton will win the Nobel Prize in Economics this year.....

What the hell ever happened to the Barry Goldwater types, who truly believed in a right to privacy, & who hated the religious rights' influence as well...Barry Goldwater's quote about Falwell is my all-time favorite conservative quote when he said:

"In response to Moral Majority founder Jerry Falwell's opposition to the nomination of Sandra Day O'Connor to the Supreme Court, of which Falwell had said, “Every good Christian should be concerned,” Goldwater retorted: “I think every good Christian ought to kick Falwell right in the ass.”

There are enough divisions within the Republican party, so will they vote for McCain or stay home?..From electoral vote site:

"Wall St. Republicans love Romney, really care only about tax cuts

National security Republicans love McCain, mostly care about terrorism and Iraq

Evangelical Republicans love Huckabee, care about God, gays, guns, and immigration

Libertarian Republicans love Paul, care about Iraq, guns, privacy, and immigration"....

If McCain gets the nom and he runs against Hillary many Democrats will vote for McCain.

It shows just how radical and out of the mainstream the Republican Part has become that they would paint someone with the hardcore right wing voting record of McCain as a moderate to liberal candidate.  No true Democrat would ever vote for the guy.

What about the McCain/ Feingold campaign bill. McCain / Kennedy Immigration bill. Gang of 14. Votes against tax cuts and support for "global warming" remedies.

I wouldn't be too sure of that..I have talked to some all time Democrats that say they would vote for McCain over Hillary. Maybe its just in my town but there are a lot of people that just don't like Hillary..

I have other doubts about him of course, but I think he's honest enough. He was willing to go to the mat for what he believed about immigration, and go to the mat the other way for what he believes about the war.

He said some wacko things at the beginning of his campaign in trying to attract the pro-war vote. I think he was just trying to prove to the all-important fucking insane wing of his party that he was one of them. I don't think they were fooled, though he looked fucking insane to everybody else.

But if it was Obama, then there'd only be a record fundi-Christian turnout to vote against Obama the anti-christ, but not intentianally in support of mcCain. And other repubes would sit home not energized by McCain and not worried enough about Obama.

This election won't be a test of popularity, but rather turnout will mainly be driven by voting AGAINST an opponent, imho...

is, IMO, John Edwards....He a southerner, a la Carter, Bill Clinton - he's someone who has reasonable chance of picking up southern red states....I think he'd beat all the Republican candiates handily...But for whatever reasons, he's not resonating with Democrats in the primaries & his run is all but over.....

In 2004, Democrats went w/Kerry, calling him the most electable, & if that philosophy held true, I think Edwards is this years most electable....

I live in SC and voted for McCain and he is the only one that can beat both Hillary or Obama .
McCain ain't no Democrat.
Edwards could not even win NC he is a joke that helps Hillary and Obama would love it if he dropped out.

the Clintons have made some kind of deal with him. Probably not VP, but something.

LOL Edwards won't even win the primary in his home state. He has zero chance of winning any of the southern states in a general election.

What a double standard that exists because of a right wing media....Edwards gets a $400 haircut & he's branded an elitist...You never see Romney branded as an elitist, though he's wealthier than Edwards....Edwards is a "pretty boy" & Romney "looks presidential"....Quite the double standard...

This same crap happened in 2004...Kerry was the "elitist" & his opponent whose name I forget was this "good ole boy one could sit down & have a beer with".......BOTH went to Ivy league universities & both were multi-millionaires yet the media portrayed the Republican candiate like this folksy guy....What f-ing BS....

extent how they use their wealth.

Romney could be giving 10% of his money to the Mormons, and he'd be just another religious wackjob.  Doesn't matter.  What MATTERS is the way they LOOK, and their PRESENCE on the podium.

Now, I'm not advocating this, or saying it's fair.  I'm saying, it's what happens.

But, just so you know, any man who EVER gets a $400 haircut is a "pretty boy".   That may be the LEAST of our worries, given the present lot of scumbags.

They would vote for McCain, however reluctantly.

Republican electoral victories are heavily based upon consistently superior turnout rates compared to the Democrats. The GOP ain't going to toss away this basic advantage.  No candidate is perfect in the sense that he satisfies every voter on every issue, McCain is no exception.

Ask yourself -- what self-respecting GOP voter will stay home out of annoyance at Mccain IF the cost is the election of Hilary Clinton?  See, it's that simple.

MCCain may be imperfect, but at least he's  imperfect from the GOP side of the aisle.

Tht kind of self-defeating electoral behavior is more typical of the Dems.  The GOP hasn't considered this since the Ford-Reagan  primaries in 1976.

If the R's nominated Chuck Norris...or Ron Paul, for that matter...every registered R in the country would vote for him to keep an R in the oval office.

If the D's nominate HC, you can bet a bunch of the young Dems who have gotten involved in this election because they are sparked about Obama will just drop out again because they see Clinton as the "establishment", and it will hand the election to the R's once again, just like people who voted for fucking Nader did to Gore.

of who the Dem candidate is.

McCain can pretend he's not following the Republican agenda, and he can get a few votes.

This will be a case of people voting AGAINST candidates, and there will be a low turnout.

If Romney is the candidate, a Democrat could win, and I think the RNC knows that.  They know McCain can be pussy-whipped, so they'll let him have the nomination.

With Duncan Hunter out of the race (the only real conservative running), it matters less to me who wins the nomination. I'll vote for McCain if I have to, but would prefer Romney.

Swear to god though, if Huckabee is anywhere near the ticket....top or bottom.....I'm voting Democrat.

GaGambler2173 reads

My worst fear, Huckabee vs Obama. I could not bring myself to vote for either of them. I can't believe I am saying this, but I could vote for Hillary if the only other choice was Huckabee.

I'm not wild about McCain, but I could hold my nose and vote for him against any of the dems.

Crystal_Ball_Operator2129 reads

90% of Republicans will frog-march to the polls, pissing moaning & whining every step of the way, to keep any Democrat out of the White House.  Because that's what they do.   They don't need buses or armed escorts to find the polls, like a lot of the Dems, and they understand the concept of lesser evils, unlike a lot of Dems.  They vote because they believe that their children will go to hell if they don't.  They all think the freaking world should rotate around them, but the Repubs bitch about it, while the Dems pout about it.

A lot of the reason that McCain is the GOP front-runner is that, after Bush, he's the only one who has a snowball's chance in hell of being elected.

BUT if the economy is totally fucked in the fall, we could get ourselves a woman President.   And I KNOW the GOP will get an independent prosecutor the day after she's inaugarated, to investigate all the porn films she's going to make in the Oval Office.

Notice that the NYT has come out for McCain vs. Clinton, and notice I beat them to it.
