IF there was work in Mexico, they wouldn't be flocking to the USA in record numbers.
I know you were trying to be cynical, but the fact is, there is no way in this or any other Hell Mexico's economy can ever come close to being any more than a fraction of the US .... even with Mexican oil bringing in new windfall profits for their country and economy.

Pay an immigrant day laborer $5 per hour for an 8 hour day, and he's made more money than his brother in mexico will make in a month, maybe even a year.

I've been fortunate to be able to travel extensively, and in my travels, I have seen some extraordinary wealth, and devastating poverty.

Despite all the myriads of problems and political gridlock the US is mired in, there are still a number of good reasons for anyone living anywhere else to want to live here.

If only we could get rid of the self-serving politicians and their mindless followers.

Think about it. Why do illegals from Mexico come here to work?

Instead of the country being the light of prosperity and freedom for the world, that could be described simply as we have a currency that's worth more than the Peso. When they send dollars back home, it buys a lot more than pesos.

Since the dollar has been declining, probably the good news is that it will slow illegal immigration. If the dollar is bad enough, we might just stop it cold.

Again, the Bush administration shows its genius.

it's what I've always said - all you have to do to stop the fucking little cockroach pests is to wreck the economy.

I want our neighbor to the south to be stable enough so that if they immigrate it is not the poorest that do so.... or the least educated or the most prone to violate the law.  In much of latin ameerica the difference between the wealthy and the poor is so vast as to be unimmaginable... like you, I have been fortunate enough to travel in Latin America from the 70s on.... and it has (over that span of time) just from the bus to the resorts gotten MUCH worse...  (if that was possible).

So - what can be done... and it would have to be done by the Mexican government....  but in light of poor control of the states in most of the country, the corruption that exists...etc... well?  what can be done.

interesting, I have read a few economic analysis papers on the latin american problem, and they trace much of what exists today, to the system that spain and portugal put into place centuries ago... all with the help and assistance of the catholic church...  again, what is to be done for the future.

I've watched all the hand-outs my state of MN likes to give illegals and thought it'd be a good way to get a taste, but with the ever-shrinking dollar, I may need to sneak into mexico and look for work!

(Fortunately I didn't store any wealth in american dollars before deciding to take the rest of my life off and sit on my ass in an igloo... I feel sorry fort the rest of you workin' stiffs!)
