Lakers coach Phil Jackson makes a joke that is offensive to gay men. But he apologizes and the usual taken out of context and blah blah blah blah blah. Then Jackson thanked beat writers and other journalists for dismissing the comment as an innocent joke. He said several of them laughed when he said it.
Where's the outrage? Wasn't Don Imus making an innocent joke?
Nobody seems to be lining up to scream for Jackson's dismissal.
I bet he won't have to go into rehab either. Or do the talk show circuit to reiterate his apology. Surely, the only reason his remark is tolerated and dismissed as a joke is because of the pervasive climate of homophobia in professional sports as well as in society at large.

It is high time that those who insist on twisting one's words in order to impose censorhip are given a swift, forceful kick in the ass. It is the same do-good, knee-jerk-meddlers that preach tolerance when they embark on their scam excursions. "What we say is good and you can say anything you want with our prior approval." "Phobia"? If one disagrees with a pseudo-lib it seems to be claimed to be the result of a phobia. Is Workphobia still promoted by the pseudo-lib leaders?
White, average Joe Sixpack males though not a "minority" have been the most maligned demographic for decades. You can say any disparaging, debasing, impugning thing you want about adult white heterosexual males on TV, radio or privately, and absolutely NO ONE will race to our defense.
If I put a round through the cerebrum of a Gay, or Lesbian, or Black, or Hispanic there is a distinct possibility I could face a Federal "Hate Crime" charge. If one of the members of those minorities does the same to me they'll be charged with simple murder, probably plead out to manslaughter, then be released from prison in three or less years.
It's about free speech. For jokes aimed at white males, we're usually the first ones to laugh.
Frankly, I think "hate crimes" should be aimed only at felony attacks committed by members of an organization. The purpose should be to keep racist and sexist organizations from becoming harassing or violent.
Jackson didn't say this with a listener-ship the size of Imus'.
Second, I do think this not nearly as bad as what Imus said. To a straight male, anal penetration from another male could only be perceived as an attack. In fact, any sex with another male sounds like that. It's perfectly logical when straight guys can't get any pleasure from it. I have to be tolerant here.
The funny thing is, surveys of gay males find that 2/3rds of them don't even like nor engage in anal sex. It's strange that this never gets any press.
Another funny thing: there's probably at least one gay male on Jackson's squad.

CBS today announced its decision to cease broadcasting the Imus in the Morning radio program, effective immediately, on a permanent basis.
“From the outset, I believe all of us have been deeply upset and revulsed by the statements that were made on our air about the young women who represented Rutgers University in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship with such class, energy and talent,” said CBS President and Chief Executive Officer Leslie Moonves, in announcing the decision. “Those who have spoken with us the last few days represent people of goodwill from all segments of our society – all races, economic groups, men and women alike. In our meetings with concerned groups, there has been much discussion of the effect language like this has on our young people, particularly young women of color trying to make their way in this society. That consideration has weighed most heavily on our minds as we made our decision, as have the many emails, phone calls and personal discussions we have had with our colleagues across the CBS Corporation and our many other constituencies.”
