My guess is that he tried it all at at the end of the day, he wasn't any happier than if he had done none of it, so he considered it all to be meaningless.  With that said, I have to think there were some good times, but at the end of the day it was too much of a good thing and the monotony of perpetual pleasure ended up giving him a totally jaded perspective.
