General George Washington set forth two hundred years ago:

1. Lead by example. JackO is right, on this one. If you are to order troops to battle, are you willing to fight or send your kid.

2. Be able to answer the question: "Is this good for America"?.

3. The first priority as President is the first job as outlined by the US Constitution; Commander-in-Chief. That is the President's first job, to be leader of the US ARMED Forces. To defend the US Constitution against all enemies.

To satisfy the above three elements the President must be a leader first and manager second.

by the way, Your an Ok chap Hunter S, Thompson, errr Dr. Gonzo.

I believe the role of President must be both.
He must be a savvy leader with the ability to properly delegate authority.
As much as I despise Cheney and the machinations he has achieved as Veep, itso happens I agreewith the idea of the VP having a more substantive role than had been the case prior to Gore.
A metaphor that would work for me would be if we think of the US as an aircraft carrier, the Flagship of the Fleet... you have the Admiral, in charge of Everything, who maintains his HQ on the boat, and you have the Captain of the Ship, who runs the boat itself.
The United States is far too complex and varied. The President must, as Leader of the USA, be responsible to the rest of the world. The Admiral. But we need someone able to focus 100% of their energy on domestic issues within the United States. The Ship's Captain.

We don't need micro-managers, but we do need a proper delegation of authority more accountable and amenable.

I can't wait for Jack to read this...He'll have a coronary!
Which by the way would be a good thing. :)
Just kidding JackO, But maybe a good case of temporary paralysis of the hands would be nice.

TY Breaker, that's very gracious of you to say.
I am humbled.

Oscar Z. Acosta was the real life Doctor Gonzo, I merely channel his soul and emulate his glorious and High achievements.

So Breaker, I guess if your Dad were to be in favor of something but you weren't willing to go that would make him a hippocrit?
I've never understood what the kids are or are not willing to do has to do with the parents when it comes to anything. The last time I checked we weren't REQUIRED to do something just because our parents thought we should after we reached the age of majority.

Equal dollops of Leader and Manager.  The only addition that I would add, is that he "shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed" ie... the duty of a policeman.

But otherwise... yea, good thoughts... now can we find someone willing and able to do this!?

The problem is, as we all know that anybody able would not be willing, and vice versa.

What honest and capable man(or woman) could possibly navigate the morass of partisan politics and keep his ass, much less his soul intact?

Sorry, like most people here, I don't have a solution. I might suggest scrapping the whole two-party system, but that's more of a pipe dream than a solution.
