what a fuck

The Supreme Court on Wednesday affirmed a ruling that requires New York City schools to reimburse a wealthy businessman for private special education for his son.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071010/ap_on_go_su_co/scotus_special_education

This story doesn't have a lot of details, but special ed is AFAIK a Federal mandate, and the most common special ed qualification is ADD/ADHD.  Diagnoses like Asperger's are ballooning.

And these dx are connected to health insurance - almost every policy covers "disorders" (like depression, SAD, etc) that are also special ed issues in kids.

Now the problem is that there are no objective standards for these dx.  NONE.  And this makes this a wild card, a loose gun on deck.   "Substantial interference" with somebody's life comes whenever they say it does, and they can find a shrink who will write a dx on the theory that "we have to do something!".

So what is happening here is that we are rewarding the people who claim they're the biggest victims, without any objective standards.

I have seen cases where wealthy people go out and get detailed opinions that their brat needs his dick sucked daily, and because the schools (and HMOs) have bought into the standardless identification of psych "problems", they really can't oppose it.  So  they wind up subsidizing the   people who really need a slap upside the head more than anything else.

We're just changing the tune of the society, from "I can" to "I can't, so you need to pay my dick-suck bill".

As we head toward nationalized medical insurance (which if well organized is probably a good thing      ;)  these pseudo-medical issues will tag along, with the potential to break the bank.

Hurrah for knee jerk-meddling-do good, pseudo lib pinkos. What the hell happened, the monster you fed so well bite you in the hand? Maybe it will take a bite out of your ass the next time.

especially the part where you figured out that this was all MY plan.

I just can't keep up with you, Harry.  You're too  fast for me.

you are either sitting there laughing your ass off.... (my approach to this board)

or - that little vein on the right side of your balding head is growing.... (this probably is you!)

But then again, you could be a provider who gets a perverse joy out of torturing us.... and that would be a kick.

the libs wanna do for the health care system what they'vbe done for the job market

and it's not as simple as libs vs. cons.

There's good and bad about the alleged health care system, but introducing BS into any system doesn't seem like a wonderful idea to me.

The important thing is to understand how this is going to turn into a clusterfuck.

There are outfits like Kaiser that do some things incredibly well.  That same outfit fucks other things up.

The American govts do some things very well.  Of course everybody notices the things they fuck up, and God knows there are enough of those.

The "no standards" aspects of psych in schools and medical card can break the bank, and yes, turn us into a society of pathetic assed crybabies.   You know, folks who can't remember their DUIs or military service.

representing PI cases.  Insurance defense are more often abusive, but you don't know that unless you see it up close.

Yeah, I think the HedgeFundsfortheHomeless is funny (as in sick), along with $200 haircuts and Gingrich's computers for homeless, but it does illustrate the social divisions.

There's got to be a rule of reason, and in the end, there has to be local authority and responsibility, within a national system and structure.

their rate of return as claims made.  So insurance costs are as much a function of the stock market as any claims.

Big jury verdicts are 1st, man bites dog stories; 2nd, they're JURY verdicts, not bench - judges are usually much colder and more cynical.  3rd, they're almost always compromised or reduced on appeal; and 4th, almost anybody who's worked around it realizes that insurance companies all methodically cut corners to short-change claims.

It's not the big guy that pisses me off, it's having watched the big guys operate that make me willing to stand back and let the courts have their way.  It's because I know the courts will fuck the little guy most of the time, and most of the time he had it coming, but not quite as often as he gets it.

And I know this cuts 2 ways, just as the original post above.  Big debtors act just like little debtors, except much sleazier, you know?

One of the biggest "fucking hypocrite" practices that pisses me personally off isn't about money, it's about military service, so chickenhawks get under my skin.

In the end, the govt only wants 2 things from you, your money and your body.  The money thing is negotiable, we can reach a deal; but the body thing is harder - you know?

If they do for the health care system what they did for the job market that would be great news for America.  Among the past 8 Presidents, the strongest  job growth happened during the Johnson, Carter and Clinton administrations, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  At the bottom of the rankings were Reagan, George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush.

Dems couldn't create those jobs if those administrations hadn't lost so many before the libs took office.  As a result, it's Bush, Reagan and Bush Jr. that were truly responsible for all those jobs.  Libs never look at the big picture.

Libs should be grateful that the cons are there to make them look so good by comparison.  If the cons were to create a lot of jobs, then the libs would have to actually work to look good.

I hate to go there with you again, but do you think standards can be developed?

fixed dollar amounts on subjective benefits.

The problem is in the underlying systems, and perhaps to a lesser degree in the failure to recognize that not everybody can be saved.

No child left behind sounds good, but it will never be the truth.  It's simply a matter of deciding what goes where.

Mod 1:  Let me reiterate what I suggested briefly, this is where grassroots politics is going - into the psych field.  Schools and HMOs are using this to justify philosophical issues, when IMHO they should be using objective standards (eg bones set, tests passed) because they are manageable.  Subjective issues are not reproducible, and therefor not managable.

Mod 2:  Not to suggest we should fall in love with, nor be deceived by bureaucracy.  Mgmt is not everything, but it's probably better than no mgmt.
