I had the privilege once of observing Tibetan Buddhist monks put the finishing touches on a sand mandala. It was a beautiful, intricate, geometric and three-dimensional pattern composed entirely of colored sand and the focus of their meditation and prayer. It was mesmerizing to watch them make it. And then, with deliberate brush strokes, they demolished it. This was to remind themselves and onlookers of the impermanence of all that exists.
I was thinking about that today because summer is like that, isn't it? What is incredibly lovely may last just a moment -- or at most a short while. Butterflies in their winged state live only a week or two. Fireworks take our breath away for a few seconds, at most. A glimpse of the shining back fin of a dolphin in the ocean, less than a second, perhaps.
Are these not even more special for being short-lived? And my time with you may be short, but it can still be special. And if I did it right, hopefully memorable! Nothing lasts forever. Let's enjoy this incredible summer, and spend a little of it together!
