What I tell my son....

Rappers who preach hate and prejudice and the killing of cops.
Ball players who take steroids to cheat.
Grandstanding atheletes who play a team sport as an individual.

All these - he was liking - his hero (at one time?, TO! arguably a good athlete - but a child of a man.)

I sat with him, and had him watch Brian's Song.  After, I asked - who would you rather have as a friend?  Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers?  or TO and 'fiddy cent' (drug dealer turned rapper).  He got it.  Why we no longer make heroes of such men (and yes, these are men) as Sayers is beyond my hope of understanding.  His courage and loyalty to his friend went beyond color, creed or religion.  Sad that there are those who would squander human life, all for the sake of pride or other human hubris.

Sorry, my rant is over.

here is a picture, it was touching. When the men for whom he blocked for during his career with the Cleveland Browns i.e. Jim Brown, Leroy Kelly and Bobby Mitchell helped Gene Hickerson; I was moved, for real. It spoke to me of what we could be and should be as a nation. It spoke for race relations. It spoke for unity. It spoke for the need to help the players who made football great.

For anyone who has ever been in battle you know of the bonds we make and how we feel when someone hurts. Gene Hickerson was hurting and his buddies were there to help him. Talk all you want about Global Warming, Alberto Gonzalez, Iraq, Israel and Paris Hilton but the most important issue facing this world is the need for people to seek understanding and look beyond one owns prejudices either being racial or religious. Yes, I myself I am guilty.

For now I settle for NFL and the Players Union helping out the old school players. If they don’t then I most certainly will support Congress in forcing them to do so. What’s fair is fair.

I know I shouldn't be like this but I have a much stronger affection towards tanned ladies. I really an not into blondes although I have met a few very nice Blondes.. Same thing with Red Heads, many are very beautiful  but just not my cup of tea. Tall tanned lady and standing next to me the contrast helps show that fine tan she has.I just can't help myself .. I do open doors for all ladies though even blondes.

what they usually have a much harder time figuring out is what grownups really want, because we too often reward the assholes with money, fortune, fame, and indeed public office - while reducing the good guys to selling their stories.

the media glorifies stupid and destructive behavior  - when was the last time you saw a story about truly altruistic activities done by celebs... and when was the time you saw a story about Paris, or lindsey or Brittney - doing something incredibly stupid (or for that matter dog fighting ala michael Vick?)

You may think that they figure it out, but much like getting on an elevator with everyone facing the back wall, it is hard to drive against the current of public pressure.  And the press - does press these idiotic events on us.

I wouldn't blame 'the media'.  Peers are more likely to influence teens, imho, and it seems to me that most of that group are influenced most heavily by their parents and teachers.   People who can't stand the pressure of a corner newspaper with silly news need constant & immediate supervision.

So my point was, it often comes down to what those parents and teachers reward.

It's pretty hard to maintain authority while things are truly fucked up.  IMHO, the combination of civil rights injustices and inability to get anything done in Vietnam undermined the govts of both LBJ and Nixon; and it looks like Iraq alone will be enough to undermine Bush, because it's a much more massive FU, and more clearly his sole responsibility.

been able to travel with the ball, or had performance enhancing drugs but we had HEART. Cheers, my friend, and God Bless our heroes.
