These dudes, while crass upper crust college kids, were the victims of a violation of their civil rights.  Where was the everlovin ACLU?

This type of suspension of activity by the ACLU loudly proclaims for all - their true intentions.  The destruction of the American judicial system.  Finally, some sanity is returned.  But these guys?  their lives have already been sacrificed - they will forever be tainted by this event.  Nifong?  His kids should suffer the same consequence.  as for the dude himself?  I say put him in prison - a prison with many many skinheads... - let them deal with him.

The abuse of power by public trough swilling government tyrants will only get worse as the cancer of too much government continues to grow. Fortunately there are some who recognize their duty such as the North Carolina Attorney General did in this case. Also, where is a meaningful response from Jackin Jesse after he inflamed the situation for so many months? His comments are pathetic. He should a least admit that he was full of feces.

mugged a couple white girls on halloween. then intimidated witnesses throughout the trial...

kids got probation...

They could afford it and had lawyers who were better than any ACLU types.

We might also wonder why some of these other groups seem to have been conspicuous by their absence and their silence :

National Lawyers Guild;
Southern Poverty Law Center.

I'm also curious about the victim in this case.  Where does she stand re her possible responsibility for false accusations?

In fairness, as noted by another poster, this is not the type of thing that would traditionally fall under the purview of theA CLU.  I'm hoping that many individual members of that org would be aware of the travesty presented in this case.

Nifong bids fair to be disbarred and very vulnerable to sanction by the NC criminal justice system.  Withholding exculpatory evidence, that's really a severe no-no, and not a laughing matter under any circumstances, no what who the defendant and what the alleged crime.

If Nifong is criminally sanctioned, I'd imagine that he will spend the next decade in court defendinghimself from civil suits brought by the Duke students in question.

I must dissent from your last idea, though I understand the anger which gives rise to them.  Persons are committed to prison as punishment, not for punishment.  Criminal violence and victimization of one inmate by another is no joke.

They were presented to the press as guilty, instead of innocent.
Evidence favorable to their case was withheld from defense council.
Several groups pressured the charges be brought.
Nifong released information to the press - that should have been held till trial...
Since when do you select which version of a victims testamony can be presented and provided to the defense?
????

Those are all civil liberties.... as defined by the presumption of innocence and a "fair and speedy" trial...

What, don't cha like lacross?!  I actually don't - don't even like lacross.... but believe in fair.
