What is a provider reference...and what if this is your first time? How do you get a provider reference?

Let's say that you've seen Provider "B". Then later on, you contact Provider "A" for an appointment. She asks you for a provider reference, so you give her the name, website, email address, etc of "B". If you've never seen a provider before, she may have an alternate screening process that she will use. CAUTION: Be real careful about giving out provider information. Many of them are very adamant about their privacy. Ask first if you can use them as a reference, especially if you think you may want to see them again.

Hi, Greg,
Some providers won't see you w/o a ref-others will and usually want you to give a work address to be sure you're on the level-I had trouble at first because I'm retired and had no refs-but once you get one, it's pretty easy after that-I totally agree with John that you should ask the current provider if you can use her as a reference in the future and most will from my experience-but its just common courtesy to request permission-Later, and good hobbying to you-1rob....OUT

and they ask you for the names of creditors...

Everyone has to start somewhere.  You can either join a screening service; RoomService2000, DateCheck or Preferred 411.  Or find an agency that is "reference friendly."  Sadly, not all are.  Also some providers will see a client with full disclosure of their personal information (as requested on their appointment request form) without references.

When you see your first independent, ask her at the end of the appointment if she is willing to be a reference.  Then, each time you use her, send her an e-mail and give her a heads up to expect a request from another provider and tell her the provider's name.

When you have additional references, do not continue to only use your first provider reference as this is unfair to her.

Finally, many providers only give references for 6 mos or a year.  Sadly this became necessary when some "initially good" clients became "not-so-good" clients through their behavior.  These gents would then provide references from a time when they were good clients, rather than give current references. Use a current reference.

"Good luck!" and "Happy 4th of July!"
