Dungeons are great for ambiance and some areas of BDSM play, but please be careful - many of the house Dommes aren't all that experienced (not all, I'm sure there are many wonderful ladies and dungeons out there). In addition, you usually cannot speak with a Domme prior to walking in for a session so it is hard to establish chemistry. With an independent lady, you can get more specialized attention which is great for a novice. Either way, it's important to get the negotiation and communication right to build the perfect 10 session. Good luck!
Does anyone have any experience with the BDSM or dungeon scene here in NYC? I did some searching on this board and the BDSM board but so far all I have found is more along the lines of individuals ladies posting. I am an absolute rookie with this stuff.

Some dungeons in nyc got busted a few years ago so there's not as many as there used to be...there's still several, you can find them if you look...
I visited nyc around that crackdown time and was planning on doing dungeon rental but actually had to get a hotel because no one wanted to session in the dungeons...ha..
There's plenty of awesome Ladies with private dungeons and I'd have to agree that there are many benefits in booking with an independent

Is that what happened to The NYC Collective, I was a pretty nice place, saw 4 different ladies there, and only one wasn't that great, the other 3 were incredible. After it closed saw one of the girls at another dungeon in mid manhattan. Live in Florida now and thats one of the main things I miss about NY, you even mention something like that down here and people act like your from another planet, it is 2012

I've never visited one in NYC but have been to several in Los Angeles in years gone by. Although I understand what the ladies are saying about independents I can tell you from experience that this does not always guarantee the connection you are looking for either.
To me the attraction to the "houses" was the elaborate settings and props and the presence of multiple ladies. Even if they don't join in on the session (which they did for me - 4 at one time) just seeing them when you come in and knowing they are there seems to add an adrenalin rush of some sort.
The first place I visited allowed you to come in and take a tour and meet the ladies before having a session. This is something I would highly recommend if you can find it since you are new to this. I believe I read that Pandora's box allows this.
I can also tell you that I took two tours before I actually decided to go through with it. The first time I came away thinking to myself that it was a nice fantasy but I could never actually go through with it. Be careful though, because once these things get inside your heart they don't want to let go. I think that is actually why they allow the tours because they know how it works too.
Eventually I got to the point where I realized it was inevitable that I was eventually going to take the plunge and might as well get it over with so I went for it.

I'm a rookie myself, just starting experimenting a few months ago. I've visited both Mistress Elizabeth's and the Fortress and had really good experiences at both. Elizabeth's is less expensive than the Fortress but the ladies at the fortress have a lot more experience. If you want anymore details feel free to send me a message.
I have played in a Dungeon, but prefer playing with independent.
Playing with an independent is much more rewarding especially if you develop chemistry. Once there is chemistry, each session becomes a building block for the next with an understanding that the session should be mutually satisfying.
In my opinion, I found the experience independents are more concern about safety and keeping their incall and toys clean.
If ambience is what you are looking for, there are dungeons for rent by the hour.
