Bartolo Colon; home run hitter
Hi everybody!
I had to post this here, it's just too fantastic not to. In case you missed it, last night Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon hit his first homer, and in doing so became the oldest player to hit his first. The link below has video and other various tidbits, but I would heartily encourage you to hunt down the video with Gary Cohen's (the Mets announcer) call, as it is fantastic. I just about died laughing when I saw this last night. All hail King Bart!They almost had to give him oxygen in the dugout.
In the past, there were some pitchers who were dangerous as hitters. Babe Ruth comes to mind...in 1918, he lead the AL in homers with 11. Only time a pitcher ever won the HR crown. BTW, he pitched a shut-out in the Series that year, which was three in a row, setting the all-time record for most consecutive innings of shut-out pitching until Whitey Ford broke it in the 60's, and Mo broke it during the last run of Yankee greatness.
As I recall, Dave McNally, Cy Young Award winner with the Orioles, hit homers in the '69 and '70 World Series, the latter of which was a Grand Slam. Who says pitchers can't hit?
