If you don't make it, you give the other team the ball on a short field. If Denver works it in for a field goal, it becomes a 3-score game. Plus, I don't think Rivera thought they could make it, given the trouble Denver's defense had been giving them.
Sure, but my point is that punting it away gives the same result as not making it on 4th down anyway - you lose the game. So why not actually try for it on 4th instead of praying that the punt returner drops the ball that, in theory at least, he doesn't need to even touch?

Hell and a LB won the MVP
There wasn't much offence going on today.
The bookies lost a lot of cash today.

Don't disagree that the zebras blew some in Denver's favor...but 6 false starts, umpteen 1 and 2 yard runs on 1st down IN A ROW, special team screw ups like blocks in the back and letting the kick returner loose for 60 yards, many turnovers, dropped passes, Newton NOT running, missed throws and a makeable FG and Carolina seemed to do it's best to do the things to lose-Cost me a few hundred and was disappointed-Carolina's defense did its job, but no one else on the team did-Denver deserved the win...Carolina did not       1rob....a tad poorer today....out

what I am puzzled about is I don't think they even mentioned the Carolina all pro tackle (Short?) all game.  Did he not show up, or were they letting him be held?

Panthers, they STILL would have lost.

They were just out played and exposed.
