that when you use a calling card, the receiver would see a blocked, or unknown number message on their phone, which does you no good at all!!!

Maybe I'm missing something, but where is it that an entire area code is an "undesirable neighborhood"?  These days, most major cities have multiple area codes, and in many cases, they cover the exact same geographic area.  Some cities even have a specific area code for mobile phones.

Yes, cheap prepaid phones are basic, meaning that they aren't cameras, or mp3 players.  But I don't know of anyone that would sell any type of cell phone service without text messaging or voice mail.

Visit the Virgin and Tracfone sites to check out the details.

This is probably a stupid question, but what phone number shows up when you use a prepaid card..?  Are there temporary hobby phones you can rent or purhcase?  What phone number shows up when you use them?  I would like to use a temporary separate hobby phone so that I at least know what the call is for when its coming and don't feel jumpy when I get an unexpected call at a bad time...  Is there a cheap way to get a temporary hobby phone that at least displays the area code I'm living in or lets me choose?

Have you tried the pay-as-you-go phones?? As in prepaid like boost mobile?? I know a few of my clients have those... Not sure how expensive they are though...

I'm pretty new to this, but after reading about such phones here on TER I went to Target and got a phone for $10, plus the cost of the prepaid card for the minutes (thank you all for the advice!). You call in and activate the phone, and they give you a phone number just like any other phone. That's the number that shows up when you call. I then used it last week to set up a date and it worked out great. Best $10 I ever spent, it really gives me peace of mind to know that it is, essentially, untraceable.

But what area code shows up with that Target phone prepaid card?  I would rather it be my area code rather than some area of code of an undesirable neighborhood.  No one's going to pick up if it's the area code for a slummy neighborhood.  Can you receive text messages and voice mail with that prepaid phone?  How basic is it?

It uses the area code that goes with the area code you give them when you set up the phone. The phone is very basic, but it will do text and voicemail. They also had much nicer phones with more features, but this one does what I need it to do. It was so easy, just go check them out.

I don't know about calling cards per se, but with the the phone I desribed above the number does show up when you call (I tried calling my "real" phone just to check).

I use a Virgin Mobile phone that works very well for me. The number assigned to the phone is what shows up on caller ID. You can buy the phones and air-time on pre-paid cards using cold hard cash (with or without an envelope marked "gift" - sorry just had to stick that in). That way it's safe and almost impossible to trace.  The only information you have to give to activate the phone is a valid e-mail address, so use your hobby email addy. And you can get one in your home area code.

For additional insight, here's a recent thread with some additional discussion.

I got a Tracfone...  Motorola flip phone at Walmart...  I buy a card with cash every 3 months.  When going to a date, I switch the Tracfone into my belt carrier & put my main phone in the briefcase.
Once I have recharged the Tracfone, I destroy the spent refill card...  it would be best to do it right outside the store & drop the spent card into their trash.

I just got a "hobby phone".  I didn't know this, but even with a regular contract cell you had have the name and/or number blocked on CID.  The coupon clipper in me wouldn't spend so much on a pay-as-you-go.  Though the phone is cheap, the service is outrageous!
