Date-check, preferred411, RS2K, etc. are all worth looking into and likely have procedures for self-employed blokes like you. The best one for you will depend greatly on your location (p411 is national, but others are more regional).

I'm new to the hobby, so I've never seen a provider, but I also don't work for a 'company' but rather self-employed, and do very well. In this case, how do I provide some sense of security/screening information to the provider? Any feedback is helpful, thanks.

I NEVER EVER provide work information. Had a bad experience once and would never do it again.
Frankly, I don't think work is the best way for reference anyway. There are ways to do it.
Unless you are some obscure consultant who doesn't advertise anywhere and hold licenses in your local, it shouldn't be a problem to verify.
Be upfront with the lady you are contacting, note that you are self-employed, and share as much as you are comfortable. She may or may not have other questions. If it doesn't work, try another lady.

Most established ladies who screen will not have a problem verifying self-employment. She may ask for a few more details to verify who you are. Always remember, her main concern is just to make sure she is going to be safe and you are who you say you are.
