San Antonio hired Becky Hammon, currently with the WNBA San Antonio Stars, as the NBA's 1st full-time female assistant coach. Hammon will retire as a player at the end of WNBA season. She did some intern work with the Spurs while recovering from a blown ACL last season. Normally, this hire would seem to be a head-scratcher but the Spurs are the most well-run organization in the league, and Popovich never does anything hap-hazardly, or out of emotion. Hope it all works out for Becky.

You can't say anything positive about the WNBA or WNBA players here without a someone labeling you a mangina.

Having said that, there are few women out there who are a better fit for what Pop is hiring her for than Big Shot Becky.  She's a class act (queue the outrage over her being a "traitor" by joining the Russian women's team so she could play in the Olympics), has an unbeatable work ethic, and fits perfectly with the "no glamour, all business" Spurs.

Think about it. You had Nancy Lieberman coaching the D league team in Dallas. Prior to that you had the lady from the Meac also coaching men in the D league. This is just the next step for women being a field general in the first of all major sports. It would only stand to reason that this would be the league to do that considering that Bill Russell and Wayne Embry were the first minorities to be court managers and general managers in a major sport.
