Hi guys,

I am about to head for Germany for about a week and plan to hit several FKKs near Frankfurt. Budget to spend about $1,500 there. Any suggestions for cheap and easy ways of exchanging dollars to euros?

Thanks a lot.

You're always going to get the best exchange rate using an ATM.  However, your bank may impose a fee for using an ATM outside their network and your're going to get hit with the 3% Visa foreign transaction fees, unless you have an ATM card without any fees.  This will still more than likely be better than changing cash at a currency exchange.

The ATM is definitely the way to go, even with the additional charges.  A couple of other suggestions:

1. Check on your daily limit and try to get the bank to raise it.  The exchange rate is very good right now, but you don't want to fall short by being a victim of time zones and when the "day" starts.

2. Let your bank and credit card companies know you'll be traveling overseas and using your cards in Germany.  Most likely, you can do this on-line.  If not, they are likely to see a transaction in Germany and assume the card has been stolen and lock it out.

3. Many ATMs give you the choice of debiting your account in Euros or dollars.  Take the Euros.  The dollar exchange rate they offer is higher than the current rate.  The only time I would take the dollar debit would be if the exchange rate was fluctuating and heading in the wrong direction on a daily basis.  But, that's not the case right now.

You're about to have a mind-blowing experience!

Also open a 2nd account with different financial institution..  Always as Max101 mentioned let them know you will be in Germany!!!  2nd account will allow to draw more $$ each day plus if one locked you have a back up..

just to confirm that all suggestions in this thread are good
